I have been taking lessons and getting information from this forum. I am seeing improvement, but still struggle with the feel vs the mechanics. One thing I have noticed in my practice is that if I drive with my legs vs feeling like I am hitting the ball with both feet firmly planted and rotating around (vs sliding or driving my legs) I don't hit the ball solidly. When I have the feeling of hitting from a firm base the shots are solid with a slight draw. The question I have is when you are at the top of the back swing do you feel like you are driving your legs forward (to wards target) or into the ground. I have read (not here) that you should allow your legs to drive forward (to wards target)and that some instruction even talks about leg drive being critical to achieving power. Based on my practice it seems like unwinding the torso while keeping a solid base on the down swing is the way to go. I would appreciate the members thoughts on using the legs in the swing and what you are feeling from the top of the swing through the finish.

I would appreciate the members thoughts on using the legs in the swing and what you are feeling from the top of the swing through the finish. This is total personal preference and in my opinion highly unlikely to have that much affect on your swing as long as its a motion consistent with your overall pattern. For example Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson have lots of legs and foot action, but it fits in with what they are doing which is free swing motion of legs, hips and arms. A guy like Boo Weekly on the other hand has quit legs and drives his swing with arm and shoulder power rather than the swing of the legs and hips. So in my opinion the legs and feet need to fit in with how you power the swing. I know thats not a great answer because its not really an answer because it depends on your other swing characteristics. I would say that the majority of players would benefit from the lots of leg and hip action in the swing, I say this because so many people dont swing the club but are tense and guiding of the club. If you want to use the free motion of the legs and hips then the videos by Shawn Clement on Youtube are really good.
