What ever happened to the blades hit the ball farther findings?

Blades don't hit the ball farther, they keep a tighter dispersion pattern... on mis-hits and solid strikes.

Yeah, nobody ever said that blades go further. In fact, I believe what the study shows to a tee. The thing about a cavity back is that you can hit it further, particularly on a mis-hit.

Lesser golfers like that because if they have a shot where water is short and they mis-hit it, they can still hit it over the water. I think the better golfers can mis-hit blades and not have too big of an issue with distance. I typically hit my iron shots on the sweetspot, but I've mis-hit more than my fair share and still haven't had an issue.

The problem with CB's is that even if you mis-hit them...there's a lack of consistency from a yardage and directional standpoint. And the dispersion on sweetspot strikes is less than MB's.

One of my readers is a former club designer and club design consultant for a lot of major OEM's. Last year he told me that they did studies on this about 10 years ago and got the same results.

My belief is that cavity backs are more popular now because the ad agencies have really convinced the golfing public that they just can't hit blades. Which I find to be very false for a lot of golfers.

I drank the CB kool-aid for a long time believing that I just wasn't good enough to hit a blade.

When a good golfer would say things like "I play xxx blades because I can work the ball easier with them." I only heard "... blades ... work the ball easier."

To me (and many other golfers I'd suspect) "work the ball" = "curving the ball"... and why would I want to make curving the ball EASIER if I was slicing the ball off the planet at the time? I wanted to hit the ball straighter, not curvier.

My college coach had me go to cavity's so I would be 'playing for my misses.' I didn't know a whole lot about blade design vs. cavity back design at the time. I did hear people say that you just have to be incredibly good to play blades.

But, I now find it to be much like my course strategy. With my metric based course strategy, we play for the results when we take an average swing. Most amateurs try to play for when they miss the shot.

Very similar conservative approach with the irons. The only reason why I play CB in my 3 and 4-iron is to help me with adding some trajectory to those clubs, but I can hit a MB on the sweetspot without an issue in those long irons. Anyway, playing for your misses is really for the birds.
