I figured I would be doing these for a while. Just my thoughts on a golfer's swing. I'll be basing most of my thoughts on what I've learned from Kelvin Miyahira, Lucas Wald, Gabe Writer, Victor Rodriguez, Jeff Martin and others.
First up, I came across the swing of Gerina Mendoza Piller. She was a former Big Break Contestant and is married to Web.com and PGA Tour player Martin Piller. She ranks 11th in driving distance and 81st in driving accuracy (out of 145 players). I've never really looked that much into LPGA data because they do not have ShotLink. The deviation in fairway percentage seems to be smaller which would mean that the longer hitters are likely to be more effective off the tee.
Here's a couple of videos of her swing:
For as long as she hits it for a LPGA player, I find a couple of things interesting. For starters, she doesn't have a big move in the backswing. Not much pelvic rotation, hands are not overly high, backswing is short. It reminds me a bit of the older amateurs that don't take much of a pivot in the backswing.
I like a few things she does here. She initiates the backswing with her right hip/thigh area. That gets her into the 'mode' of getting dual internal rotation of the hips. While she does not make a bigger backswing and have more pelvic rotation, she does kick the left knee in a bit, getting it closer to the ball. That again is part of the left hip internally rotation. She also has the clubface slightly closed.
At about p5.5 she does a lot of things well that would produce speed.
She did not kick the left knee towards the target. Instead, she allowed her pelvis to rotate and got a little Anterior Pelvic Tilt. That creates her dual External Rotation of the hips. Going from dual IR at p4 to dual ER by p5.5. She also didn't get any RPT. Her hips are level and can rotate.
She also appears to have gotten some right shoulder external rotation and left shoulder internal rotation. I believe her husband has worked with Chris Como and Chris is a big believer in Dr. Sasho MacKenzie's left forearm pronation, trying to get the club head plane flatter than the hand plane.
The other thing is that her pelvis has rotated to the point where it is already open at this stage.
From there she continues to get pelvic rotation. She has a drive hold release. The right picture has a lousy camera and distorts her club face a smidge.
That being said, she may have a tendency to get a little more rate of closure than your typical drive-holder because I think she's losing a small amount of right shoulder external rotation. But, she has a nice amount of lateral bend of the spine and everything flows together nicely. Also, the left hip is behind the left ankle, meaning she's rotating instead of sliding.
Where we start to see the slide is not until she heads into p10 as now her hips slide forward and are on top of her ankle. But the ball is long gone by this point. It only creates a sawed-off looking finish position.
