To Tiger's driving, Hank points out that during the time they worked together Tiger switched from the 43.5in steel shafted driver to a 45" graphite shafted driver and that his distance improved. Yes, his accuracy got worse, but Hank argued that everyone on the PGA Tour got worse as well. We would have to look into the stats to verify this. It's already been done. Essentially, just about everybody's distance improved and fairways hit got worse. So, they got that correct. However, Tiger's distance didn't not improve as much as the Tour average in distance improvement. And his % of fairways hit went down FAR more than the Tour's average decline in % of fairway hit. It's really denial and an excuse. Tiger's driving got far worse under Hank. And now it's already far better. 3JACK I am not defending Hank, although I know it seems like I am, but he did say in the book that Tiger had this extreme desire to play a ball that spun more than the other pros. Hank felt that this ball cost him some distance. The quote he used was funny, he said Tiger liked to use the ball that spun because "chicks dig the spin".

Golf.com did a ball test a few years ago (I had it bookmarked, but Golf.com has recently expired the page), and the Nike One Platinum, the ball that Tiger's was supposed to be based on, was the shortest by a large margin. He switched to the One Tour D a year or two ago though.

I kept that issue of golf mag for years, I remember the Nike One Plat spinning around 14,000 rpm on a wedge hit by a robot, the nearest competition spun at around 10,000. I was surprised how well the Nike PD Soft and Noodle spun, and I have bought those ever since.
That ball could explain Tiger's lack of distance off the tee, but I dont believe that ball was on the market for more than two years.
