Some of Golf's greatest shots were made with a 1-Iron. The game is in danger of losing this storied club! Help spread awareness and preserve this club for future generations to enjoy! www.savethe1iron.org

Yes and I carry it in my bag. I hit it off the tee sometimes out to about 240+ and from the 225-240 range in the fairway.

The old one iron is probably closer to a two iron in loft today or maybe even a three iron. I defer to Richie about the lofts.

I'm not R3J, but... When comparing vintage to modern you really need to look at modern blades. Comparing anything vintage to a set of modern perimiter weighted, CB irons can get stupid fast. Vintage gear is usually around 1/2-3/4 weaker (iron for iron). Example: My Wilson DynaPower 2i is 20*... a Wishon 555m 3i is 21*... but because they are the same length (vintage is typically 1/2" short vs modern blades) the clubs only differ by 1* and the number stamped on the bottom. I had a eye2 1 iron for a bit, sold it. I still hit my 2i a lot off the tee... I just think of it as a strong 3i.

The vintage 1-irons have a loft of what would be a modern day 2-iron. That's because the vintage clubs typically had a higher CoG and thus they needed more loft to launch the ball in the air. Furthermore, what the modern companies found was that they could sell more clubs by making the lofts stronger, lowering the CoG and making the clubs longer with lighter shafts. That would get golfers hitting their 7-iron as far as they used to hit their 5-iron and the average golfer falls in love with the 'extra distance' and buys a new set.
I have a few vintage 2-irons. I never use them in play.

I don't own one. I almost picked up an eye2 1 iron a few months back but didn't bother in the end because I have a vintage 2 iron for practice.
A regular playing partner of mine carries and uses a snake eyes 1 iron, which he uses off the tee alot (he's got the driver yips) and puts it out there a long way. He also uses it off the fairway but chunks it a fair bit.

I owned a PING Eye 2+ 1-iron when I was a junior golfer. I was money with that club until I got a Taylor Made ICW5 2-iron, which I hit ridiculously well. Martin Chuck once told me that he hit the same TM ICW5 2-iron awesome as well. 2-irons and 1-irons are a great way to practice.

I've got an old Nicklaus 1-iron. I take it to the driving range once in a while, but that's it.
