I don't think I've ever come across a coach that is so bad, yet has more supporters sticking up for him than Paul Pasqualoni. UConn lost got taken behind the wood shed by....Towson State....at home...to start the season.
I watched Clowney play for USC last night. I think it's a bad idea to make him the #1 overall pick if you have a legit franchise QB prospect there. The dividends for a franchise QB will pay off more than a great defensive player (see the Dolphins taking Jake Long instead of Matt Ryan). I saw on Twitter that people were knocking Clowney's play (see: jealous SEC fans). I thought he was terrific considering he was cramping and had a stomach virus. I was reading about how teams use a machine called TENDO to measure punch strength and how Clowney's punch strength is off the charts and is much, much higher and more consistent than anybody at USC. And he was being clocked at a 4.4 forty. Against UNC he seemed to just rely on power given the cramps and the stomach virus and was still dominate, IMO, consistently getting pressure and penetration.
The Ole Miss vs. Vandy game was fun. I like the Vandy coach and I liked what Hugh Freeze tries to do on offense. That game and the Vandy crowd's emotion is one thing I feel that the college game has over the pro game. The fans are there to actually watch and pay attention to the game. There is no 'fan friendly experiences' and worry about luxury box seats. And so many of these college stadiums are far, far larger and have far more expensive ticket prices than the pro games. And yes...I know that the Cowboys' stadium is the epitome of the 'fan friendly experience.' That's why the Cowboys get more of a HFA at away games than home games.
Anyway, I'll be watching Syracuse vs. Penn State. While I like SU athletic director Darryl Gross, I can't agree with him scheduling 1 game a year at the old Meadowlands. I know he's trying to corner the entire state of New York market, but Syracuse needs to have these big games against big-time opponents at the Carrier Dome first. It's hard to sell a SU fan on making a trip to the Dome when the weather is still nice out or when the weather is awful to see them play freaking Wagner. But I digress.
I think this game will likely determine what Scott Shafer's coaching career will look like. He should have decent tools around him. I don't expect them to win, but they need to look good from a fundamental standpoint and be competitive. If they can't do those, then he's probably going to be a flop.
Then it's UGA vs. Clemson. Mark Richt is good for being woefully out-coached at least twice a year. Unfortunately, I don't see Dabo Swinney being the guy to do it. And I wouldn't count on Clemson winning a truly big game if my life depended upon it. I'll wait until UGA takes on South Carolina and Richt inexplicably gets out-coached by Steve Spurrier, of all people.
In typical college football fan reaction, people are pissed that Manziel only got a 1/2 game suspension. Meanwhile, the NCAA has no evidence that Manziel took money. I don't think he should have been suspended for 1 second, much less a half. And I can't stand Manziel. Its just that the NCAA is worse.
