Thanks.
From an analytics standpoint he does a great job. I think they also miss Dajuan Coleman. He gave Christmas and Keita a breather and was a good defensive rebounder. And he could get an occasional game where he would score well on the inside.
But the bigger problems are that the screens have been awful. Hard for Cooney to get a good looking shot when nobody sets quality screens for him. And it makes Fair’s job harder. Those mid-range jumpers are not as open as they once were, the 3-pointers are not nearly as open and he can’t use the screen to drive and get a mis-match. It doesn’t help that SU is obsessed with forcing the ball into him. He needs to be able to drive and dish to the outside more.
Ennis needs to look to score more. I never noticed how much better he shoots from the left side of the court. It’s rather astonishing. But, he too often wants to have Fair, Grant or Cooney to do their thing and when it’s not working, he needs to step up the offense. He also needs to look to push the ball more, particularly on long rebounds and steals. He is often too content with slowing the ball down into the half court offense and running the shot clock inside 10 seconds.
The other issue is the 3-point defense. Cooney is an issue here. Against Maryland I was screaming at the TV has he lost his man 3 times in a row and then got beat badly on dribble penetration. It resulted in a quick 8 points being scored. The problem is that you can bring in Gbinije who is a better defender, but can’t make open buckets.
And then you have Christmas who can look very good, if not great at times. Then other times look disinterested and show no hustle. Keita is a good defender, but teams have realized that he will badly bite on pump fakes. And Keita’s only offense is usually getting an offensive rebound.
I like Grant, a lot. He reminds me of Hakim Warrick in the sense he is good for about 1-2 highlight plays that will make you jump out of your seat. And if he ever gets a good solid jumper, I think he could easily be a top-5 pick. While I love Boeheim, this is where he starts getting players playing a bit scared because if Grant misses a 12-foot jumper, then he won’t take one the rest of the night.
Obviously, they can beat anybody out there if they are healthy. But they have to set better screens, Tyler has to look to score more often and they have to stop forcing the ball into Fair and having him force shots. As much as I love Boeheim, he’s never been a very good tournament coach.
