Course: Eagle Creek
Weather: 87*, Sunny, 0.5 – 1 club wind
Ball: Bridgestone B-330
Stimp: 9
My dad and I played Eagle Creek. He had never played Eagle Creek. Supposedly the course was in bad condition last summer. I played it a month ago and for the most part I thought the course was in great shape, but you could see the rough had some issues. The course was pretty much in the same condition this time around. On a side note, we played with a husband and wife and the wife shot 33 on the front. It was by far her best 9 ever. She jumped out of her shoes on every swing. She could get it consistently airborne and fairly straight, but she couldn’t maneuver the ball. And on the back 9 she got caught in a few pot bunkers and didn’t have a chance to get out of them. She probably shot close to 50 on the back nine, with a 10 on one hole and a 8 on another (both par-4’s).
#1: This was a good drive that faded a little and found the right rough. I had about 100 yards into the hole and I hit a Sand Wedge to 6-feet and made the birdie (-1)
#2: Hit the Gonzo Wood here and didn’t hit it well, but ended up okay. I had a very tight lie in the rough and I hit a PW thin, but it found the green. Pulled my first putt, a 20-footer. And I made par (-1)
#3: Pulled a driver, but ended up okay. Had an uphill lie with the ball above my feet and my 9-iron ended up being a big draw that went long and left of the green. Thought I hit a perfect pitch but it rolled about 4-feet past the cup. Thought I hit the putt perfectly where I wanted to, but it lipped out and I made bogey ( E )
#4: Good driver down the middle. Smashed by driver off the deck to about 45 yards to the hole. Good pitch to 3 feet and made the birdie (-1)
#5: Ugly 4-iron that found the front bunker. Decent bunker shot to 12 feet. Mis-read on the putt and I made bogey ( E )
#6: Decent drive down the middle. I hit 7-wood and caught it a little off the heel, but it carried the bunkers. Hit a chip to about a foot and kicked in for par ( E )
#7: Good driver down the middle. I had 145 into the hole which is normally a 9-iron for me. The pin was cut up front, but there was some wind in my face. So I tried to knockdown an 8-iron and I didn’t hit it that well and ended up just short of the green. I had an easy chip that should have gone in. I was thinking about having the flag removed since it was not standing straight up in the hole. Had I removed the flag, the ball would have gone in. ( E )
#8: So-so 7-wood to 30-feet. This is a crazy green because it slopes well upward. I ended up 2-putting for par ( E )
#9: Decent driver down the left side of the fairway. I cranked a driver off the deck to about 30 yards to the hole. They had the cup tucked behind a ridge and I hit a decent chip, but I left myself with a 10-footer. Pushed it and made par ( E )
#10: After a long wait (it was a slow round), I got up and lost concentration and snap hooked one left onto the cart path. Fortunately, I had a shot, albeit from a bad lie. I caught my 6-iron a little fat, but ended up just short of the green. Rule of 12 chip (PW on the Rule of 12, but I used 9-iron to account for the upward slope). Hit it to a couple of inches and kicked in for par ( E )
#11: Another 7-wood. I struck this one well, but it wasn’t one of my best swings and I flared it right. I had a moderately difficult chip, but I knocked it right in the cup with my LW for birdie (-1)
#12: Good driver down the middle. Hit a 4-iron decently enough to the middle of the green. Had the read, but I pushed it a hair and made par (-1)
#13: Good driver that I pushed a little, but was still in the fairway. I thought the bunker on the left was just off the edge of the green. So I hit my driver off the deck and aimed at the left bunker thinking I wouldn’t get it there and if I did, it wasn’t that difficult of a bunker shot. Instead, the left bunker is about 60 yards short of the green and I hit it into that bunker. I then hit a LW surprisingly well from that bunker to about 12-feet. Had the line, but gassed the putt. Made par (-1)
#14: Good driver down the middle again. By now I had switched to a Pro V1x. I think the Bridgestone ball just flies too low for my tastes and costs me some yards. I then flushed a PW, but the green slopes harshly uphill and I spun it back about 10-feet. No worries, I drained a 30 footer for birdie (-2)
#15: Decent driver that was struck well, but pushed a tad. Hit a 6-iron a little thin and pushed it, but it found the green. 2-putted nicely from 35 feet. (-2)
#16: Good driver down the middle followed up by a crushed driver off the deck. Hit a LW to about 10-feet. Lipped out the birdie putt (-2)
#17: Another long wait on the tee. I try to handle these situations by not leaving the cart until the group ahead of us is clearing out of the way. Too much standing and waiting is infuriating and causes too many swing thoughts in your head. I flushed a 5-iron to 5-feet. Then I hit the putt exactly how I wanted to, but lipped out. Incredible (-2)
#18: Decent driver down the middle. I like this hole, but it should be a little shorter for a golfer like myself so there is a chance of going for it in 2. Instead, I have to lay-up. I chose a 4-iron since I didn’t want to have more than 100-yards into the hole on my 3rd shot. Hit it pretty well. Unfortunately I ended up with one of those clumpy lies in the rough. I just dug it out of there to about 20 feet and 2-putted and made par (-2)
THOUGHTS: A few weeks ago I heard Patrick Reed talk about how he struggled to find the clubface despite shooting in the 60’s. I thought how nice that must be to feel like you played like dogshit and still shoot a ho-hum 69. But, this is what this round felt like. It really wasn’t until the 14th hole when I started to consistently make good contact. And I didn’t putt that great either. Instead, my misses were very playable and I was leaving myself in good position if I didn’t find the green. So the up-and-downs were fairly easy and I went 4/6 in scrambling which ended up +1 overall with one of the missed opportunities on a 4-foot putt that lipped out.
