Course: Metrowest
Weather: Mid-90’s, 2 club wind
Stimp: 10
Ball: Nike RZN Black
We decided to play Metrowest since the deals were pretty good and after a tough time at La Cita (which I think is one of the more difficult courses to play in the area), I was looking for something a little more open off the tee. This was the 2nd time I’ve played with the Ping s55 irons with the KBS shafts that are MOI and Balance matched. However, I still do not have the 4-iron ready (shaft is too heavy). I tried the RZN black as I liked them when I used them last week at LPGA International. I found that I hit them a little further than the Titleist Pro V1x and I think they feel great.
Metrowest was in better condition than when I played it in May. The course was more green, particularly in the fairways and in the rough. The tees were in great shape and the greens had noticeably softened. I feel very confident that Metrowest will not only have great greens for years to come, but arguably the best greens for a public course in the area. They roll beautifully and now they are receptive to approach shots.
#1: Good drive down the middle. I was in between clubs as I had a PW, but with an uphill lie. I hit it at the flag, but it wasn’t enough club. Easy chip and putt and made par ( E )
#2: Another good drive down the middle which I usually struggle with on this hole. I then hit a pretty good 9-iron to 15-feet and drained the birdie putt (-1)
#3: Hit a 5-iron well, but missed the green left. Nicely done lob shot to 3-feet and made the par save (-1)
#4: Another good drive on a hole I usually struggle to drive it well on. I then hit a good 2-hybrid to about 70 yards. Hit the LW to about 10-feet and canned the birdie (-2)
#5: Another good drive down the middle. I was again in-between clubs and didn’t hit enough of the PW and was short of the green. I also short sided myself and could only hit my lob shot to 7-feet. Ugly putt and made bogey (-1)
#6: Weak drive into the right rough. It was into the wind, so I had a 3-hybrid into the hole and I missed the green right. Good pitch shot to 5-feet and saved the par (-1)
#7: Tried to avoid the right side and I hit a draw into the fairway bunker. Not a very good fairway bunker shot. But, I then had 240-yards into the hole and flushed a 2-hybrid onto the green. Worried too much about the line of the putt and didn’t pay enough attention to the speed and I ended up missing short. Made par (-1)
#8: Flushed a 6-iron to about 25-feet. 2-putted and made par (-1)
#9: Another horrendous drive that missed well right. I tried to play up the right side, but did it too much and didn’t have much of a pitch shot because of the tree in my way. Pitched onto the green to about 20-feet, 2-putted and made bogey ( E )
#10: Good drive, but it was into the wind. I followed that with a pretty good 2-hybrid. Then a PW to about 15-feet. 2-putted and made par ( E )
#11: Another good drive. Hit a soft PW to 15-feet and made a putt off the fringe for birdie (-1)
#12: Another good drive. Had to punch an 8-iron into the wind and hit it to 30-feet. 2-putted and made par (-1)
#13: Another good drive down the middle. This time the wind started to swirl and go with me and I didn’t have a long ways into the green. Hit a small 8-iron onto the green 2-putted and made par (-1)
#14: Good driver down the middle. I started to work on some new things and had forgotten about them on holes 6-9, but after the turn I got into the groove with them. I then hit driver off the deck and found the green in 2-shots. Had a very downhill putt, but the wind was blowing hard into the putt and I left it 6-feet short. Just missed the birdie putt and 3-putted for par (-1)
#15: Hit my Wishon 4-iron nicely, but just missed the green (it’s a very narrow green). His a great chip to a few inches and kicked in for par (-1)
#16: Huge driver down the middle. I then hit a LW from 89 yards to 88.5 yards and made birdie (-2)
#17: I hit the Gonzo wood so-so on this monstrous par-3. Weak flop shot to the fringe and then a weak chip to 5-feet. Made the 5-foot bogey save (-1)
#18: The rain started to come down and I took a poor swing and missed left. But, I see that if you miss left on 18 you are usually in decent position. I flushed an 8-iron to 25 feet and lipped out the birdie putt and made par (-1)
THOUGHTS: Not every day I can shoot 71 at Metrowest from the tips with a 2 club wind going. My putting was really good even with the 3-putt. I love the feel of the s55’s and I hit them a little further than the Wishon 575 irons. The ball flight is a bit too high for my liking, so I’m going to try the Nippon Super Peening Blue X-Stiff shaft in them this week.
I think I solved some minor swing issues. I think I didn’t have enough knee flex at p1 and had my weight too much towards my toes in the backswing. I feel that screwed up my spine extension pieces in the backswing and was forcing me to get into early extension in the downswing (trying to not keep my weight on my toes in the downswing…early extending to get out of that).
