I have a friend that works at the Golf Channel and he was giving me some of the inside scoop and the rumors about the deal.
The only certainty about that type of profession is that there is complete uncertainty about that profession.
I hate to see her go because she is the 'hot chick', but also has a legitimate golf background. I'm a little uncertain with how much she may have helped the game's popularity. I think it's imperative to get more women involved in the game. I know that has failed for decades, but I do believe that the game can generate more female interest if they marketed it correctly. The problem with somebody like Sonders and using her to generate female interest is that she's intimidating to a lot of females. I think the same goes for Paulina Gretzky, although I think she appeals to the under 25 year-old female crowd. That's why women like Jennifer Anniston are so coveted...they are attractive, but not intimidating and appeal to a wide range of females.
For TGC Sonders worked well because of her looks, youth, golf skill and knowledge. Supposedly she is going to be a sideline reporter for NFL games and do golf coverage. There's a bit of irony here because I think she'll lose a bit of value as a personality because hot sideline reporters are almost a dime-a-dozen in football and sports in general. The hot chick that can golf that is on the golf channel is rare. That's what separates Sonders from Win McMurray (golf fanatic, but not a very knowledgeable of skilled golfer) and Lauren Thompson (no golf knowledge or skill). I can see Sonders kinda fading out after 5-10 years like Lisa Guerrero, Jill Arrington and Lisa Dergan. I actually think shine has come off Erin Andrews' star since going to FOX as well.
My friend was telling me the rumor was Sonders got a 7-figure deal. So, I can't blame her for taking the money and worrying about the future when that day comes. And she can probably always go back to TGC if things dry up at FOX.
