Sandra Gal gets discussed quite a bit for her golf swing, so I wanted to see what it looks like:
Gal currently ranks 50th out of 145 golfers in driving distance and 78th in driving accuracy. I’m guessing that would make her maybe slightly better than the average in effectiveness off the tee. However, she is 6’0” tall which is enormous in the world of the LPGA. So her ranking 50th in driving distance has me curious as to why she doesn’t hit it further off the tee.
The p4 position I think tells a lot. Her club shaft is well short of parallel. She has dual IR of the hips, but she looks more centered than right loaded. She is also a bit flat in the ‘swing plane’. Combine the lack of right load and flatter swing plane and the club is likely to stop short of parallel. Of course, one can bomb it with a short swing, just ask Sandy Lyle. But, in her case she’s not using her long levers quite as much to help generate more speed.
I think she starts more with the left knee/shin ‘kicking out’ towards the target (aka starting from the ground up) than she is ‘moving the middle.’ She does get some anterior pelvic tilt and I love how she does not have a hint of right pelvic tilt. But, at this point a long hitter would likely be in dual hip ER. She also doesn’t have much of a right elbow move, perhaps due to her flattish plane going back.
She does get her left hip behind the left ankle. It almost looks like to me that she wants to get more rotation, but her mechanics what she has probably been taught are fighting against it. She has a classic flip release which would explain why she doesn’t hit it further and why she’s not overly accurate either.
Here we see the left hip and ankle in line. Meaning that she was sliding all along and finally the left hip caught up the left ankle.
I don’t like this swing as much as Gerina Piller’s or Brittany Lincecome’s and the numbers indicate it’s not nearly as effective as those swings either. The good news is if she wanted to make some changes, she has some nice lower body pieces there to do so.
