I haven't been here in a while, so hi folks, hi Rich! Hope you're all well. I took a year off from the "Swing Engineer" website to concentrate on other things, but have posted two updates recently. Firstly, I've answered something I've been questioned on a lot recently - Bryson DeChambeau, and specifically, should you attempt to emulate his swing, and should you use single length clubs. You'll find the answers here... www.theswingengineer.com/FAQ_6.htmlSecondly, I've written a practical 10,000 word guide to creating a precision golf stroke, detailing the anatomy, biomechanics, alignments etc involved in doing so. Several readers have described it as the most useful golf instruction book they've ever read. Don't take their word for it, read the introduction here... www.theswingengineer.com/the_basic_motion.htmlAs usual, any questions, you know where to find me. Take care, and happy G.O.L.F.ing to you! Thanks Swing Engineer!
Michael Neff had Bryson on GEARS and found that his hand path plane and club head plane were almost identical and he has come the closest to matching those 2 planes as anybody he has ever recorded.
I was going to do some statistical analysis on Bryson's game on GolfWRX, but got caught up in some other business and with the US Open this week, I decided to wait until that was done. It will be interesting to see why he has cooled off lately.
I have Wishon's Single Length 5-iron. I mistakenly thought that it was the equivalent of a 4-iron due to its low loft. However, I was told that it actually plays like a 5-iron.
The 5-iron is remarkably easy to hit and goes very straight. Hard to get much curve on it. I think this really throws an interesting question as to the length of the shaft and its contribution to curvature instead of looking at it from a Spin Loft perspective.
The issue for me is that I prefer a bag setup that looks like this:
Driver 3-wood 2-hybrid (17 degrees) 3-hybrid (20 degrees) 4-iron thru PW SW (mine is 52*) LW (mine is 60*)
That provides the necessary gapping that I like, particularly on the longer approach shots or anything from 3-wood into the irons. I use a 52* Sand Wedge for full swing gapping purposes. I hit mine about 122 yards and my PW about 136 yards. I find that it is easier to hit the SW, say 100 yards with a less than full swing than try to hit a 120 yard PW with less than a full swing (if I were to use a 56* SW instead). I can hit shots with the 52* SW around the green, but the bulk of the shots right around the green are hit with my 60* LW anyway.
The Wishon set goes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW, GW and SW (set at 55*). Of course, you can have your own SW instead of the Wishon SW if you like. But, that's 7 clubs from the 5-iron to the 50-degree (GW) wedge instead of 6-clubs from the 5-iron to 52* club. That would mean some other club would have to be thrown out.
I'm sure I would have to think about it and could probably come up with a compromise that would work, but that would take a launch monitor and a lot of tweaking.
