Course: ChampionsGate Country Club
Weather: 65*, damp, overcast with 5-10 mph wind
Stimp: 10
My dad and I went out to play ChampionsGate CC as this was the first time I played in 3 weeks since my mom's passing. On Sunday I practiced for the first time since my mom's passing and got some decent practice in on that day, Monday and Sunday. We had some rain overnight and it was a little cool by FLA standards, but otherwise it was fine.
#1: Tumbling draw to the left rough and then hit the 9-iron high off the face and end up short of the green. Nice chip to about 1-foot and kicked in for par (E)
#2: Well struck 5-iron, but I pushed it into the bunker where it fell out of its plug spot which created a weird lie. Good bunker shot from that ie and then I lipped out a 7-footer for the par save (+1)
#3: Hooked my driver into the drink. Dropped and missed the green short. Flubbed a chip and then put it on and 2-putted for double (+3)
#4: Hit this drive well, but pulled it in between the bunkers. I wanted to hit a 3-wood, but I had this bunker wall to hit over, so I hit my 2-hybrid down the middle. I pushed my S-Wedge a little but found the green. Had a 15-footer that I thought was in, but a little too hard and just missed and made par (+3)
#5: Hooked my driver left, but wound up okay. Hit a P-Wedge on the green, but left myself with a 50-footer. The first putt had a good line, but was hit too hard and missed the 8-foot comebacker and made bogey (+4)
#6: Well struck 7-iron but pushed it into the right bunker where it plugged up against the wall. Got it out with a blast, but just made the fringe, 2-putted and made bogey (+5)
#7: Good drive down the middle that went about 285 yards. Had a weird lie from the fairway, but struck a 5-iron we, just short of the green. Decent pitch to 5-feet, but missed the 5-footer as I over-aimed. (+6)
#8: Tumbling draw that found the fairway. Flushed a P-Wedge to 9-feet and lipped out the birdie. (+6)
#9: Tumbling draw into the left rough. I tried to hit driver, but took an awful swing and only hit a ground ball that went about 70-yards. Hit a 4-iron that was poorly struck and missed short. Pitched with a L-Wedge to 2-feet and kicked in for par (+6)
#10: Good drive that found the faiway. Hit a 3-wood well, but pulled it a bit. Good think I aimed right because I almost pulled it into the left hazard. I then mis-judged a 70 yard shot and found the green, but had a 30-footer for birdie, 2-putted and made par (+6)
#11: Decent 6-iron to 30-feet, 2-putted and made par (+6)
#12: Hooked my driver into the St. Augustine grass. Punched out and then hit decent S-Wedge to 10-feet, pulled the putt and made bogey (+7)
#13: Tumbling draw over to the left side. Flushed an 8-iron, but pushed it right. Chip to 4-feet and saved the par (+7)
#14: They had the flag all the way back to 228-yards into the cool wind. I hit a 2-hybrid and struck it pretty well and found the green, pin high. I saw a double break where it would break right and then left. I saw it as playing inside the right edge and I needed to play it at the middle of the cup. I read the double break correctly, but just a hair off as it just missed. (+7)
#15: This is a hole you probably should hit driver on, but I did anyway and hit a driver as well as I could and right on the best line to hit it. I hit a pitch shot like I wanted to, but the lie made it tough to spin the ball. That didn't matter as I made the 12-foot birdie putt anyway (+6)
#16: Good drive that tumbled a little and found the fairway. I only had 130 yards into the green, but into the wind with the very uphill lie I decided to punch an 8-iron with a 3/4 swing to be safe. I hit it well, but pulled it a bit and 2-putted from 35-feet for par (+6)
#17: This is usually a tee shot that gives me trouble...the tee shot with the wind blowing pretty good left-to-right. I played for a fade and I ended up with a straight ball that I pushed a little, but essentially pushed it to the middle of the fairway. I flushed a S-Wedge to 15-feet and again, just missed the birdie (+6)
#18: This was the first drive I faded all day, but this was well struck. Can't say the same for the 3-wood that just barely made it over the water. Pitched up nicely to 10-feet, but mis-read the putt and made par (+6)
Overall, I'll take it as I got off to a horrific start, but played the last 11 holes at even par and couldn't buy some putts. I also started to get into a groove on the last 4 holes with the driver and my irons. I feel like there are certain concepts that I'm starting to understand with regards to some of my old swing habits and what I'm trying to accomplish now. The course was in good shape and the greens were nice and smooth.
