Bunker shots from three different angles. In the first two videos I went long with 1/3 balls... and 2/3 were within 10'... not good, but considering I NEVER work on bunker shots I wasn't all that surprised.
You can hear the sand hitting the camera, that can't be good...
My favorite angle:

I've been having a hard time building my '71 buttonbacks. I picked up a set of new TTDG x200 spined shafts and removed old shafts from the '71s... but something isn't right and I just need more time to fiddle with them... Cloran, how are you doing with those buttonbacks? I'm about to do a set of those as well and am curious as to what it is that's not right... They seem to have a lot of forward lean, at least I think that's the way you are meant to hit them. If you don't the lofts are ridiculously weak and your in balloon city ... What are your thoughts?

I've moved on from them to be honest. I still have the heads and I have yet to put the X200s in a set yet. Once I stumbled upon my current gamers I haven't had much of an itch to build the buttonbacks.
I liked them with the original shafts. The lofts were weak, but so are every other set of vintage clubs until you bend them. They are a very nice set of irons.
The forward lean part I don't think is necessary. You can always bend the lofts stronger to get more distance or just learn to play a club or two more into every shot. IMHO iron play is 90% accuracy and distance CONTROL... and 10% how far you hit it.
I keep going back to the LPGA Tour. They play courses the same length as I do and would beat me down in a match.... even when I out drive them by 50 yards and I'm hitting a 7i into a green when they are hitting a hybrid (talking average LPGA player here).
... back to your question, sorry. The hosels were too small for the shaft. Very weird as they SHOULD fit a .355 taper tip. I was having a bear of a time getting the shaft all the way in (no innuendo I promise). Around that time I had purchased a few other sets that I liked, but the shafts kept breaking. I then came upon my gamers.

The dynas have a different hosel...I do not know when it was changed... this from cheesedonkey (and oricinally from Jim Y at golfworks) at ABS...I saved it as I want to re shaft my 66's...
I have never seen any of the older models that would accept a .355" taper tip. That does not mean they do not exist but all the one's I have seen and worked with had .340" taper tips and the shaft tip penetrates into the clubhead approximately 2". You can either rebore with a set of step drills or use a reamer to enlarge the bore. In either case I only go down 1 3/8". Enlarging the hosel bore deeper then that will get to where the hosel walls are too thin and could create problems being able to hold loft and lie. We have seen customers actually drill to deep and have the drill bit come through the front of the hosel.
I would always recommend using a drill press and hosel boring fixture for reboring. Even though these are forged carbon steel drilling by hand is not easy and can be tough on your hands. For the step drilling we would use first a letter "T" size drill bit, which measures .358", and drill down 1 3/8". Next the letter "U" size drill bit, which measures .368", and drill down 7/8". Last use a 3/8" bit, which measures .375" and drill down 3/8". The rubber plug, usually red in the Wilson "Fluid Feel" models is approximately 3" long and extends up inside the tip of the shaft to dampen vibration.

cloran - how did you get the shafts out of those dyna's? IIRC, you heated the dyna's to death and couldn't get the shafts out.
I had that IPT 5-iron re-shafted with a parallel tip X100 that was tipped like 3" or so. My clubmaker just drilled the hosel to .370 and put the shaft in there and said it was a piece of cake. I've got that '67 PC5 5-iron head and just got the KBS X-Stiff shaft in and that shaft is .370, so I was going to have him do the same thing. Although I have no idea on how to safely drill to .370 myself, so I let the professional do it.

Thanks Cloran and Bent,
That's not good about those buttonbacks...
Mines have the ultralite stiff shafts (with the red bands) in them, I thought these were 355 but I could be wrong.
What shafts did you have in those? IoZ

Bent: Thanks... wish I knew then what I know now, lol. I don't have the means to do my own drilling so I'll be selling the Buttonback heads when I get around to it.
3Jack: I was heating the hosels with a butane "pen" torch... and it sucked! I had no idea how much heat it would actually take. I was using an entire can worth of butane on one head and it wouldn't budge. At the same time I was reading posts about guys using heat guns and blowdryers, lol. I couldn't figure it out.
Finally I just said screw it and stole a welding torch from my Dad and heated those suckers up until they were red hot. That's what it took.
IoZ: I think they too were the ultralite stiff shafts. I have them in the garage still (well, I'm missing two of them. I used them to hold up my tomato plants, lol... my 4 year old son said: "Look dad, you're growing golf clubs!")

Thanks Cloran, bad news about the shafts though... I was wondering if you got those red rubber plugs out in one piece (without melting them)?

I didn't take them out. Two of them shrunk into the hole, but none melted out...

I was hesitant to post these vids from today, but in the interest of self deprecation I said "what the hell..."
I took these vids at the beginning of my range session this afternoon. The range was about 1/2 full at the start. The reason I say this is because at this point in the session I was still struggling with moving all 3 COGs. My ball striking was good, but I knew what I was looking for and couldn't find it.
Towards the end of the session I found "it" and unfortunately the range was packed so I couldn't video "it." "IT" was moving all 3 COGs in the downswing and absolutely smothering the ball.
I was honestly a little scared. You see, before I started to really take things serious about my swing I had this move down pat. But coupled with a lot of compensations, poor fundamentals, etc I couldn't hit a straight shot to save my life. In an effort to make some sort of solid contact I would set up with my weight on the left side and slide forward with all 3 COGs through impact.
Now that I'm getting a little better with the "fundamentals" the compression was ridiculous. I need to play around (dig it out) with stance and ball position though. The 5i-7i were perfect for my "normal" set up, but the 8i and 9i were pushed a little too far to the right on some shots. D-plane stuff. Steeper angle of attack, I need to swing farther left.
I was most impressed with the 5i. Some really nice, compressed shots. It was fun.

after looking at the FRONT on V1 I do a good job of keeping my upper centers in place through the back swing, but at impact my head falls backwards....
again, it wasn't doing this at the end of the session. I need to video it again.
On the DTL view I'm coming down right on the TSP... not what I want, lol... but at least I'm on some sort of plane!
Take away is better to P2. Tush line sucks.

It looks like your sternum center is backing up before impact and therefore your head goes with it. Your lower center is moving forward and rotating but your upper center is hanging back and not rotating,if that makes sense.

I didn't get to video the swing from later in the session, but I think I cleared up most of that mess.

Cloran that is seriously better than where you have been, you can play good with that swing. Your on the TSP, so what, alignments look great and frankly you look like a TSP player, I think any instructor moving you onto the elbow plane is making a serious mistake. Love the left arm wedge at impact, beautiful lever of the shoulder down to impact. I dont like your head movement translating back as you can see its pretty apparent. You have a little move out with your hands that gets it a little steep to start with, I wonder if you were not more laid off then made that same move if it would not translate to a better plane? Just theorizing and don't know its just a thought. Good stuff though. Ball looked like it started a little left, was it a face pull or just the camera? Attachments:

Pull fade... good flight though. I'd say 3 yards both ways. I know what you're saying about the TSP. Jack did just fine playing from there... but the swings I want to emulate are CP releases from the elbow plane. I may not be able to do it and at some point I have to accept what my body wants me to do naturally and comfortably... make it MY swing. Not there yet
