I should be receiving the Cleveland Persimmons today and will try them on the range later tonight and then play 9 holes with them on Wednesday.
I’ve been thinking about some other things, particularly what type of shaft I want in my irons.
I think I’ll be experimenting with a True Temper DG X200 shaft soon. I will also experiment with the KBS X-Stiff shafts as well.
I like the idea of the very stiff shaft because it’s easy to keep the dispersion very tight. Problem is the lack of distance becomes a bit too much for me. That IPT 5-iron I have with the X100 shaft that was tipped 3 inches, I can hit it flush and 165 y ards.
This is something I slightly disagree with Lag Erickson on. While I do believe that the main priorities with irons are accuracy and distance control, power can be a big factor. Particularly on today’s courses which have some really super long par-3’s.
I honestly believe I can hit a 5-iron as accurately as Phil Mickelson can hit his 5-iron. But Phil hits his 5-iron something like 210-220 yards long and I hit mine about 180-190. So from 185, I’m using a 5-iron and Phil is probably using something like a 7 or 8-iron. Maybe even a 9-iron.
That certainly changes the game a bit.
Basically I think I can hit the KBS further than I can hit Dynamic Gold. And with the X-stiff KBS’ weighing 130 grams, that’s really a perfect weight. The higher launch of KBS concerns me a tad, but I think if I get my lofts more standard on my Hogan irons (say 28* for a 5-iron and 48* for a PW), I think the higher CoG on those irons will keep the trajectory down.
I just bought a ’67 PC5 5-iron, the clubhead only, from the IronFinder.com. I got the clubhead for only $10. I’ll probably toy around with the shafts in this club.
Also, I plan on getting the Casio EX-FH20 soon. Hopefully mid-July to August.

So, I got the Cleveland 1, 3 and 4 woods in the mail. And all I can is...
WOW
These are much easier to hit and are very POWERFUL than the knockoff persimmon I had been playing. I CRUSH the the 3-wood. In fact, tomorrow I'm going to use both my titanium 3-wood and te Cleveland persimmon and see what goes further. I honestly think there's a GOOD chance the persimmon will go further.
Awesome stuff.

A blog reader of mine e-mailed me and about a month ago and we have had some back and forth correspondance. I can't give away his name because he currently works for a club manufacturer in helping design clubs. But one of the things he told me was that in his limited testing, there are persimmon 3-woods of the past that perform as well as today's modern 3-wood. He said that the testing wasn't exactly scientific, but the preliminary results showed the same results in length and accuracy. In fact, he told me that since we can bend persimmon woods flatter that they may be better for my swing than the modern non-bendable (or you can't bend them that far) titanium 3-wood.
Anyway, I hit a few persimmon and titanium 3-woods and found that on average, with a brand new TaylorMade TP Penta ball, I hit the persimmon about 2-3 yards FURTHER than the titanium 3-wood. So yes, I will be gaming the Cleveland persimmon 3-wood for now.

This week I ordered a PC5 5-iron head and a KBS X-Stiff shaft.
The 5-iron is just the head only, got it from the IronFinder.com for $10. I figured I should fiddle around with some shafts before I figure out what I want to do with my 'gamer' set of PC5's. So that's why I just bought the 5-iron head. I could fiddle around with that while keeping my set of PC5's that I plan to make the gamers alone for now.
The KBS shaft is parallel tipped, so my clubfitter will just drill the taper tip hosel and make it a parallel tip hosel.
What I plan on doing is having the clublength set at 38" with a loft bent to 28* and have the lie angle at 55*.
My goal is to have it so I can find the stiffest shaft possible that gives me a solid trajectory and allows me to hit this 5-iron 185 yards for now. That's about as far as I hit my currently PC5 5-iron right now which has an old Hogan shaft in it and the shafts are about 1/2" undersized.
I had thought for the longest time that the KBS shafts were light and thought the stiff measured at 120 grams. But finding out that was just for the taper tip shafts. The parallel tip stiff measures at 130 grams and the X-stiff at 133 grams. Nice and heavy.
I do believe part of the issue with using vintage blades is that there can be a major lack of distance and that may be a bit to overcome. That's also the problem with going to super stiff shafts. I have that IPT 5-iron that I can hit it flush, but I still lose a lot of distance with it.
My guess is that the KBS shafts, plus the added 1/2" will go very straight and quite a bit longer. I was a bit concerned with the higher launching KBS shafts, but with the CoG on these irons up higher on the face and the lofts being bent about 2* stronger, that should keep the trajectory down.
Really excited to get this done, but it probably won't be ready until the week of July 12th.
Anyway, my current bag looks like this:
Driver: Cleveland Hi-Bore XLS 9.5* loft Fujikura Graphite shaft (stiff) 3-wood: Cleveland RC85 Persimmon 15* loft True Temper DG X100 steel shaft 3-Hybrid: Mizuno Fli-Hi CLK 20* loft True Temper DG Hybrid S300 steel shaft 3-iron: 1966 Hogan PC5 (3.0" hosel), True Temper Steel Shaft (Stiff) 4 iron-Equalizer: 1967 Hogan PC5 (2.5" hosel), True Temper Steel Shaft (Stiff) SW: Mizuno MP-T Series 56* True Temper DG Wedge Shaft LW: Nickent ARC 60* Nippon Steel Shaft Putter: Yes! Victoria II Lofts: 3-Equalizer about 2* weak Lie Angles: Irons 6* flat Grips: Perma-Wraps on the irons, Crossline Cord on the driver

Got the PC5 5-iron head in the mail, it's in great condition. Hopefully I'll get the KBS X-Stiff shaft in on Wednesday and then I can get it back from my clubmaker on Friday for use. I should also be getting my Casion EX-FH20 on Wednesday as well.

Got some new blades off of eBay. The Powerbilt H&B Grand Slam Citation irons. These were quite popular in the day. I had a buddy who absolutely flushed them all day long. I wasn't planning on getting any more iron sets because it's somewhat of a task for me to get them bent and then re-gripped, but this was a set I was interested in and the price was right. And you never know, I may find a set I really like better than the PC5 or they may just be a fun set to play an occasional round with. 3JACK

Powerbilt used to be a bit lower down the totem pole as far as major OEM's go, but they were known to make nice quality, high end clubs. Their persimmons were a big hit as well as many of their blades. I remember quite a few PGA Tour players had these blades, but them the OEM's started to make irons mandatory in their endorsement deals and that combined with Powerbilt struggling with the cavity back market and titanium market pretty much made them the company they are today.

Got the Powerbilts in today. I am very happy with this set as the heads are in great shape. Not mint, but very good shape and their design is very appealing.
If you look at the club's face, the head is more triangular in shape than your normal set of irons. What I mean is if you look at the face there is more of an angle going from heel part of the top line to the toe part of the top line. But, the toe is round and not square. I'm not a huge fan of square toes.
These clubs felt great. Problem is that the shafts are just some Powerbilt stock shafts. Back in the 80's, most OEM's had their own stock shaft and usually it wasn't very good. Pings had their ZZ lite shafts which sucked. Hogan had their Apex shafts which were pretty good. MacGregor had some type of Vector Lite shaft or something like that.
Also I think the lofts are pretty weak, the ball was certainly going higher. I also need to bend the lie angles as they are way too upright for me. But, I may give them a run this weekend.

I have yet to receive the KBS X-Stiff shaft in the mail and tried calling the company and was sent to voice mail. I also sent them an e-mail. I order the KBS shaft on July 2nd. I hope it wasn't backordered because they didn't tell me.
Anyway, I'm going to get a GripMaster USA leather wrap grip for my Yes! putter sometime down the road. They are not cheap, like $20. But I always loved the feel of the old Neumann leather wrap grips. Plus, when I get the Edel putter, I want to make it the 'ultimate putter' and have the grip on there that I like the best.

I had to e-mail some people to figure out if the grips would fit my Yes! putter. And they do. Here's a pic of what the grip I'm getting, look like: I'm getting the one on the right that is tan with white cord. 3JACK
