Nice 2-PW (Equalizer) Hogan Redlines. cgi.ebay.com/HOGAN-APEX-IRONS-2-E-BLADES-WITH-RED-LINE-NICE_W0QQitemZ160395666529QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGolf_Clubs?hash=item255853a461Starting bid is $65, no reserve. I was thinking in perhaps 2011 of getting a set of vintage Hogan irons each month (you can do it on eBay for less than $50) and the Redlines would be one of the sets I would start with. IMO, this was the last great iron design and forging from the Hogan company. Almost all of the irons pre-1990 are quite good. Even the Apex Edge irons that I have a friend that still uses them and loves them today. I would just stay away from the Radials (no small wonder why eBay is filled with Radials for sale) and anything else that isn't a forged blade. Some of my favorite Hogan lines are: Apex PC Personals ('83) Bounce Sole 1+ Bounce Sole Plus-One '67 Percussions Power Thrust III IPT Original Apex Apex II (white cameo) '83 Medallions 3JACK

Those are really nice, but I'll probably put a hold on Hogan irons for now unless there's a good deal on the Bounce Sole 1+ irons. I may get a persimmon driver soon as well for practice purposes.

I had the Apex 4 shafts tested in some Hogans I had and they were 7.1!

The shafts measure a 7.1 on the Rifle standard of shaft stiffness. 7.1 is super stiff. I have to jot my memory here, but years ago I had 6.5 Rifles thinking that 6.5 was X-Stiff. When we frequency matched them I was told that 300 revolutions was considered 'stiff'. And that 310 was considered X-stiff. The good news was the frequency matching for these Rifles I had were extremely good. The bad news is that 6.5 measure at 325-327 revolutions. Super stiff. So 7.1 is like a tree trunk.

Interesting because I was lead to believe from this post over at ABS that Apex 4's were lighter and softer than DG S300's.

One issue is that sometimes the Quality Control isn't up to snuff. The old frequency matched rifles had an extremely tight dispersion on their shaft frequency. Like I said with the 6.5 shafts I had, every one of them measured a frequency of 325-327. However, I had some DG X100's and they were all over the place.
I had a Callaway driver and 3-wood in college with stock graphite shafts that were suppoed to be X-stiff. The 3-wood, which I hit great, measured out fine. But the driver, which I struggled with, measured out to be a LADY'S STIFF FLEX. I have pretty much eschewed everything Callaway ever since.
So the Apex 4's may not have the QC. I thought I read somewhere that the Apex 4's were quite stiff...the Apex's 3 played like S200 and the Apex 5 was mega-stiff. I'll see if I can find that somewhere.

I thought the Apex shaft scale was 1 being the most flex and 5 being the stiffest? They don't have shaft bands and when my dad gave them to me, which he got from a friend, he said they were Apex 4.
I also wonder if shafts tend to change over time? I have hit 6.5 rifles, not easy for me but I played a season with them and in comparison the Hogans are much stiffer feeling to me. The fact they measured 7.1 only confirmed my feel.

I know Lag plays with extra stiff shafts that are tipped 1/2" which would probably make them around a 7.0 or so. So an Apex 4 may be very stiff, but not stiff by their standards. Plus, I don't think the QC on golf shafts was all that great back then.

Just won some Apex Redlines on ebay.co.uk 2 iron to sand wedge for £51! Not cheap by US standards but hey...
Unfortunatley gotta wait until buy birthday to try them (mad agreement I had with my other half!)

You'll like them. I hit them a few months ago. Hogan forgings pre-1990 were just as good, if not better than Mizuno or Miura. I have yet to try Scratch Golf irons yet.
