We played Celebration GC on Saturday. I was looking at Grand Cypress, but couldn't find a good tee-time for us. But with Celebration, I knew it was in good condition and being a RT Jones design, we probably would not be let down.
#1 - Good drive down the middle followed by a PW that hit the front front edge and spun off the green. Chip to 3-feet and made par (E)
#2 - I hit 3-wood off the tee since I couldn't really see much of the hole past the first 220 yards or so, thus I assumed it was too tight to hit driver. Well, I was wrong and wound up hitting a so-so shot in the rough. I then hit a 5-iron off the toe and short and pitched to 15 feet and made bogey (+1)
#3 - We wound up playing the wrong tees. I'll get to that when I do my review for the course. So I hit 7-iron into the wind. This is a really goofy green, which is something that RT Jones avoids. I wound up being on the fringe and into this 'wicked' swale, but I hit a good chip to a few inches and made par (+1)
#4 - I wasn't sure where to aim here and I hit a good driver that went thru the fairway. I then hooked a hybrid into the bunker. Blasted out and 2-putted from 20-feet for par (+1)
#5 - Hit a decent 9-iron onto the green. 2-putted for par (+1)
#6 - Decent driver down the middle. Big block with a 3-wood, but thankfully I was okay. Followed it up with a poor approach shot that required me to putt over a huge swale. The first putt broke a ton and then I lipped out a 7-footer and made bogey (+2)
#7 - So-so driver that found the fairway. The wind carried my 8-iron right of green. Chip and a putt for par (+2)
#8 - Best shot of the day so far, with a smoked 3-wood that had a nice draw to it. I then hit a 9-iron to 12-feet and then lipped this one out for par (+2)
#9 - Found the fairway bunker on a so-so driver. Hit the approach shot over the green. Poor lob shot to 15-feet and once again, lipped out the putt and made bogey (+3)
#10 - Good drive on a short par-4. I tried to hit a flop with my 56* from 50 yards, but it went about 65 yards. I used that for the next round at Rolling Oaks. Then I lipped out another putt, this one from about 50 feet and made par (+4)
#11 - Good driver right down the middle. Pivot-stall & sling hook with a 6-iron that missed the green left. Good semi-flop to 6-feet and...lipped out another putt and made bogey (+5)
#12 - Big driver down the middle. I then hit a hybrid onto the green. Insane putt that I left to 5-feet, but saved the birdie (+4)
#13 - Caught a 5-iron a little heavy and just missed short. Easy chip and a putt for par (+4)
#14 - Nice drive down the left side of the fairway. Hit a good SW, but it spun off the roof and left me with 20 feet, I was right by the low anchor and I just missed the putt (+4)
#15 - I hit a good 3-wood here. I actually thought the ball was going in the hazard, but it wound up fine and was in the fairway. Hit a good LW to 10-feet and made the birdie (+3)
#16 - This is about when the wind picked up as a storm was about to hit. I hit a hybrid that went to the back part of the green and 2-putted for par (+3)
#17 - Now the storm is starting to hit. I hit a driver down the middle and then a punch 6-iron from 150 yards to 20-feet. Didn't quite read it right and made par (+3)
#18 - Good driver down the middle followed by a decent 3-wood. Now the wind is blowing like crazy. I punch a PW to 20-feet and made par (+3)
THOUGHTS: Celebration was a really nice course and in great condition. We got around in less than 4-hours, so I was pleased with the selection. I struggled a bit on the front nine, but started to turn it around after the 8th hole.
