I’ve had a few customers purchase the 959OL model. The ‘OL’ stands for ‘Over the Limit’ with regards to the COR regulation for drivers. The 959OL is illegal for play. At one time it was not by the R&A and that is in part as to why Wishon made the club, for golfers who play by the R&A rules. Now it’s mostly marketed to people like my dad, who play golf for fun and are looking for that extra yardage and do not keep handicap or play in tournaments or leagues.
Because of the highest possible COR, it’s only meant for driver swing speeds under 100 mph. Anything higher and the golfer risks caving in or cracking the face as the face wall is too thin to withstand a greater head speed.
The driver is not exactly customizable as they have one model, which comes in at 10.5° loft, 0° face angle and 198 gram head weight.
Part of the issue I see with the head is at 10.5° loft, does not exactly optimize the launch angle for a golfer who swings under 100 mph. I think a golfer would probably be better off seeing if there is a hand picked model at 11.5° loft.
My dad does hit it well. And my belief is that where the COR comes in is on shots that hit the exact sweespot point. But, that’s provided that the launch conditions are good as well. So he could probably hit a 11.5 or a 12° loft further on average. But when he launches a 959OL pretty well and connects with the sweetspot just right, he does get an extra 20 yards or so. Overall, he hits the driver well since I helped him with his swing and that and his 6-iron are probably the best clubs in his bag.
So overall, I’m fairly pleased with giving him the driver, although looking back I think he would be a better candidate for the 739CCG and ideally, I would want to test how he performs with difference face angles.
