Stoneybrook East is a golf course designed by Clifton, Ezell and Clifton Designs and is mostly located by old marshlands. Because of that it’s a tough course to walk because while it is flat land, the distance from green to tees is quite lengthy so they can work around the ponds and marshes. In fact, the driving range at Stoneybrook East is a big pond where the golfers hit ‘floater’ golf balls.
The course plays about 6,900 yards from the back tees at a 135 slope. There is actually water on every single golf hole. However, it only comes into play on about 10 holes. The course seems to usually be in excellent condition and the clubhouse is quite large and impressive.
Generally the fairways are wide open and because of the marshes and ponds around them, combined with the typically daily afternoon shower, the fairways are pretty soft which makes the fairways play even wider. The tougher aspect of Stoneybrook East is the greens as they are usually elevated to some degree with some tiers.
The tough holes are #2, #7, #16 and #18. For my money, #16 is by far and away the toughest hole on the course, with an enclosed shoot to hit thru on the tee shot , going uphill (447 yards) and leaving the golfer usually with a very long iron or a hybrid into the green where you can’t miss much left or right. Probably the easiest holes are #4, #5, #9 and #10. I’ve only played Stoneybrook East once, but my feelings are that the back 9 is tougher than the front 9, but that may depend on how the wind is blowing that day.
I think the best holes are #3, #8, and #18. The worst holes are probably #9 and #17, but neither are ‘bad golf holes.’
If I had to nitpick, my issues with Stoneybrook East are the distance from green to tee, which makes it pretty much un-walkable and makes you wonder if you’re still on the course along with the #3 and #10 tees are right next to a street and the residents are not exactly mindful of golfer’s hitting their shot. Otherwise, this is a very good golf club.
