I play in a group with about 15-19 other golfers usually about 1-2 times a week when the weather is warmer. We usually play in teams of 4, and play at 80% of our handicap (doesn't apply to me since my handicap is 0). We then usually play 1 best ball with 'bonuses' (if 2 or more golfers make a birdie, then we count the extra birdies as well). We put in $11 a man, then we pay out to the winning team, low net score individual, 'greenies' and skins.
We played up on the tees today because it was very cool out (50 degrees) and extremely wet since it just rained. Really a swamp out there. We played from about 6,400 yards.
#1 - Nice drive right down the middle had about 146 to the middle of the green. Green goes uphill. Hit a thin 7-iron mainly because you get afraid of taking a divot on such wet turf. Found the greenside bunker, pulled the bunker shot a little. 2 putted from 15 feet. (+1)
#2 - Hit a small draw in the left rough. Hit the green, but was on the bottom tier. 2 putted from 40 feet (+1)
#3 - Par-3, thinned a 4-iron. Just over-accelerated a bit. Found the greenside bunker. Almost knocked it in. Made a 3-footer for par (+1)
#4 - So-so drive that still found the fairway in good shape. Swamp of a fairway. Thinned a 7-iron and wound up way short. Crap pitch. Missed a 20-footer. (+2)
#5 - Big drive having 220 in the green. Drew a 3-wood a little left of the green. So-so pitch to the green. Drilled a 15 footer for birdie. (+1)
#6 - Normally it's a 3-hyrbrid so you can hit short of the pond and then hit your approach to the green. But with the tees up and my partnersin good position and getting strokes I went for it and knocked it over the water. Tough pin and hit a wedge to 25 feet 2 putted (+1).
#7 - Drew a driver into the rough. Hit a GW to 20 feet and hit the first putt about 7 feet by, made the 7 footer coming back. (+1)
#8 - Another thinned iron that found the greenside bunker. Somebody decided not to rake their gigantic footprin that was about a 1/2 foot deep and wound up taking a double (+3)
#9 - Another big drive right down the middle. Hit 8-iron to 15 feet Another double breaking putt, lipped out and took a par (+3).
#10 - Another good drive down the left side of the fairway. Hit a GW to 15 feet. Putt broke a ton and missed it on the short side. (+3)
#11 - Had to hit a 5-iron (usually you hit a 3-hybrid off the tee). Hit a 9-iron to 15 feet, but had to hit it over a tier and I 2-putted. I started to notice why I tend to struggle to shoot a really low score on this course, the greens are really tough to putt on. Lots of double breaks, tiers, saddles, crowns, sharp breaks and subtle breaks. You really need to stripe the ball and hit about 16 greens to get under 68 because the greens are tough to read, period. (+3)
#12 - Probably my worst drive of the day that caught a little off the toe and hooked pretty hard. Surprisingly wound up in good shape and hit a 3-wood to the left greenside bunker. Hit a sand shot to 15 feet, 2-putted and made par (+3).
#13 - Caught a 5-iron a litte off the toe and drew it to the left side of the green. Good putt, but not enough speed. (+3).
#14 - Another big drive down the middle. Pulled a wedge slightly, but it bounced right to 8 feet. Made the putt, thankfully I convinced myself it was a double break. (+2)
#15 - I hate this hole. I hit a driver that was straight, over the middle of the fairway. But, it went too long and hit the cart path and went over into the woods. Punched out, pitched to 15 feet and just missed the putt. Got screwed because I hit it long and straight, but hit a cart path that is 8 feet wide. Argh. (+3)
#16 - Pushed an 8-iron and found the greenside bunker. Really didn't hit a bad bunker shot, but found myself 15 feet away. 2 putted (+4)
#17 - Big drive down the middle. Caught a wedge fat and was well short. Terrible pin position. Almost ridiculous looking at the cup since the slope was so severe. 2-putted (+4).
#18 - Took a little off the driver and found the middle. Had 195 yards to the green with water in front. Striped a hybrid that was flagsville and went about 10 yards long of the pin and left me with a 50 foot putt for eagle. The 'swinging left' work I've done has really improved my 3-wood and hybrid play and today was the best day I've had with the driver doing it. Anyway, 2-putted and made birdie (+3)
Score: 74 (+3)
Fwy: 11/14
GIR: 12/18
Putts: 33
Scramble: 1/6
