I've never tried keeping score like this, but it does have some merit. Getting rewarded for hitting a fairway or GIR, etc.
I found it online somewhere:
*
When you play golf, your goal will be to hit every fairway in regulation.
(14 possible)
*
You will also want to hit every green in regulation.
(18 are possible)
*
Take as few putts as possible
(2 per hole are part of par on every course in the world)
*
When you play golf, do you keep track of fairways, greens and putts? If you do, then this is a scoring system that is based on putts and rewards for hitting the fairways and greens in regulation.
*
If you hit a fairway with your tee shot, we think you should get a reward. Your reward is -1.
*
If you hit the green in regulation, you should get another reward. It will also be -1
*
You get 2 putts on every green on every golf course in the world. Now let's add the rewards to the putts you made.
*
Fairway in regulation (-1), plus green in regulation (-1), plus 2 putts equals zero (0).
*
Now you understand why it is called Score Zero©.
*
We have not seen anyone score an actual zero for 18 holes.

Why should I bother?
* The first thing you will see, is that you are concentrating more on hitting the fairway because there is a reward for doing so. Maybe you won't swing so wild or maybe you will take the 3 wood out instead of driver.
* You will also see that hitting the green, while important, is not the only way to make a Zero or a par. There are many ways to make a Zero and score well.
* You should try it because it is fun and a better way to see how you are really playing. Does your handicap tell you how well you are playing? It is an estimate of your potential. I am a 3 handicap by the USGA system but I play to a 15 Score Zero© system. I still break 80 everytime I play but some days I shoot 73 and an 8 Score Zero© and somedays I shoot 76 and a 15 Score Zero©.
* You can see what part of your game performed the best on that day. Did you hit more fairways than greens? How many putts did you take?
A couple of simple rules
* There is no fairway on the par 3's. So you get -2 for hitting the green in regulation.
* If you reach a par 5 in 2, there is an extra reward of -1.
* To determine whether the ball is on the fairway or green, look at where the bottom of the ball is resting.
* No cheating. USGA rules still apply to golf and any scoring system you use. You must police yourself. We all trust each other to do so or else there is no point. Remember, the system is based on putts. So putt everything out.
* Try Score Zero©, we bet you will play better.
* Have fun. It is a great game
