Sometimes (more than I'd like to admit) I will hit the ground just prior to making contact with the ball when I putt.
Should I be focusing more on making an upward stroke to alleviate this?

Lie angle of the putter may be too upright. But you probably have an issue with your stroke rhythm and you're out of rhythm. I thought Mangum's putting video does a great job of explain rhythm vs. tempo and how to use that and your natural instinct and touch in order to get the correct touch on putts.

Its might be also fundamental mechanics .
ie moving head, poor pivotting. trying to bring the club in ,

I'm going to go with it's the lie angle because I really don't want to worry about mechanics, lol.
"Denial" ain't just a river in Egypt!
Do you guys try to hit "up" on the ball and impart overspin, or do you just swing "square" into the ball and try to hit the equator?
I'm comfortable keeping my hands low (closer to my body) throughout the stroke and the toe of the club is in the air a touch. It's the heel of the club that catches the ground sometimes. I confirmed that last night in my garage. Concrete floor + upright lie + impact = nice scratches on a putter to show where impact is... lol.

I find that worrying about mechanics with the putting stroke is not a smart thing to do *most* of the time.
Mangum's video goes into the mechanics of the stroke for a little bit in the video, but he generally states that they are not nearly as important as the other stuff he teaches in the video. I started using Geoff's stuff on rhythm and tempo and how to use your brain's natural ability for touch and started hitting putts much more solid and getting a better roll alone. The mechanics weren't even a thought.
Anyway, the greatest putter I ever saw...a guy who would blow your mind with his putting, had the butt ugliest putting stroke you would ever see.

Do I try to do those things on the practice green or while actually putting? The only time I ever try to do anything with my putting stroke is when I am making a change (i.e. changing grip, altering path etc.). When I am on the course I just pick a spot in front of the ball that I want it to roll over and focus my eyes there and pull the trigger. Anymore thought than that and I will probably end up hitting the ground behind the ball with the putter.
