greg I have had my share of virus BS lately--- for free---microsoft essentials--- really good...not a big MS fan, but this works really well for me (won't work well with Norton-not sure about the rest)

Echo the thumbs up for Microsoft Security Essentials. It does a great job and has very low overhead.

Malware. Oof! Good luck.
I have had various anti-virus, spyware, etc. and they generally just seem to give me shit. Practically every bit of software is constantly bothering me for an update or something. I can not turn one computer on without four windows popping up telling me something to do with my printer needs updating. What can possibly need updating? It is just a bloody printer.
At one stage, my anti-virus and spyware had upgraded themselves so many times, the anti-virus thought the spyware was a virus and the spyware thought the anti-virus was spyware. The computer slowly ground to a halt as there was this battle going on constantly in the background, both dying to tell me all about the really good work they had been doing with no care that their background processes are eating up 90% of my processing speed. This is how Skynet starts people. You heard it here first.
The most recent one is some security software I have never heard of that opens up immediately the moment I turn on the computer, lists out all the viruses (virii?), trojans, and other unmentionable crap it has found and asks me if I want to fix them or 'proceed unprotected' as if this is like leaving a child alone to look after a dozen hungry wolverines. I haven't, but I am sure clicking that you want a fix will get to somewhere asking for credit card details. I don't know if this is kosher or not, but surely this is the ultimate scam? Software tells you someone is trying to scam you, just give me your financial details and the deeds to your house and I'll sort it out. Ha ha! I am a scammer! Bunch of Berkshires.

My malware virus this time wouldn't allow me to get on the internet and it would say that I was infected and if I wanted to try and get rid of the virus, I needed to buy some Antivirus.net softward. I believe these people should be hung from the highest tree right in public.
Anyway, what you have to do is reboot the computer and press F8 when you do and that will get you into 'Safe Mode.' You can then downward the anti-malware virus software (which is free). Once you do that, you need to run a full scan of your entire computer and then delete the files that were infected. Then you will be all set.
Gotta go into safe mode though because the virus just keeps attacking you and you can't get onto the net and you can't get the anti-malware software to work.
Again, hung from the highest tree.

I'm with you. Three hours of scans and it is gone. Scum. Subhuman scum.
