This is a Ron Garl designed course that has garnered a lot of praise as among the very best courses in the area. Like other courses in the area, finances have dictated its being open to the public more than they would like -- and much more than the membership would want. The facility is beautiful for modern Florida. It is also well staffed and well maintained. there are 27 holes and I played them all. For a golf course designed to sell real estate, it is in fact very rationally laid out. The practice facility is large, easily accessible and balls are free. I assume that is because there is a substantial private membership.
The course meanders among wildlife areas, tree lined areas, ponds, lakes; everything.
I take myself to be a student of golf course architecture but until I spent time in Florida I was largely unfamiliar with Ron Garl's designs. He is quite good. I have now played two of his courses: one in Deland (i can't recall the name), and University Park. The former is a more natural design, but to his credit Garl's course fit naturally into the landscape. They sit on their sites as if they belong there as opposed to being imposed.
I found University Park to be a very fair course from the blues. well bunkered and the greens called for thought. there was no sense of playing golf as if on a driving range. I found it thoroughly enjoyable and one of the few courses in Florida I have played this year that I could see playing on a regular basis.
Highly recommended especially in early summer as the price is right and there are three separate nines that provide a good deal of variety. Bunkers and greens are very well maintained as are fairways.
