Course: The Villages - Nancy Lopes
Irons: Srixon Pro 100
Ball: Srixon Z-Star
The Villages has got about zero rain in the past month, so we played the Lopez course which was supposed to be in good shape because they have more water. It was in good condition. Hot, little breezy. Didn't get to hit any range balls because we got lost and arrived late.
#1 - toe hooked a driver into the fairway bunker. Hit a 6-iron just short of the green. Chipped and then missed the putt and made bogey (+1)
#2 - Flushed a 4-iron nicely to 20 feet. Pretty good putt, but made par (+1)
#3 - Decent driver down the middle. Had to hook an 8-iron around this huge, overhanging oak tree. Not a good swing and followed it up by a so-so chip, but made the par save (+1)
#4 - Big 310 yard driver down the middle. Crushed a 3-wood, but pulled it. Good pitch to 10-feet, lipped out the birdie putt (+1)
#5 - toe hooked a driver under a big oak tree. Good 5-iron out of, but missed the green right. Decent chip, but missed the par save (+2)
#6 - flushed a 5-iron nicely to the back part of the green. Good putt, but made par (+2)
#7 - Didn't know what this hole was like. Crushed a driver about 320 yards, but there is a huge overhanging oak tree that I couldn't hit a LW or SW over it. So I punched a 7-iron beautifully under it to 7-feet and drained the birdie (+1)
#8 - Good driver followed by a nice 3-wood and a great flop to 5-feet, but I missed the putt (hit it too hard) (+1)
#9 - We never saw the ball go and we found it under the trees on the right. Punched another 7-iron beautifully under the trees and on the green. 2-putted from 25 feet and took par (+1)
#10 - Decent driver down the right rough. Hit a PW, lipped out the birdie (+1)
#11 - So-so driver down the right side, but in good shape. Green slopes severely and the wind was in our face, so I sucked one back about 20 feet with a flushed PW. Another lip out and made par (+1)
#12 - Over-draw into the fairway bunker. Nice 6-iron out of the fairway bunker. Decent PW to about 20 feet. Illegal cup here (probably 6% of slope) and 2-putted for par (+1)
#13 - Over-draw with a 5-iron to the back fringe. First putt went short. Had the read on the 2nd putt, but hit it too hard and 3-jacked for bogey (+2)
#14 - Big driver down the middle. Then I sucked a SW about 20 feet back. Finally took a great stroke at the ball, but just a little too hard and made par (+2)
#15 - Toe- hooked a 3-hybrid off the tee. Really wasn't a bad drive, but I had an awful lie. Punched it out. Flopped and 2-putted for bogey (+3)
#16 - Hit a driver well, but found the fairway bunker. Never saw it fly, but it was a really good 9-iron as it wound up about 20 feet away. 2-putted for par after a horrible read (+3)
#17 - Argh. really a chicken-shit swing here and pumped it in the water. Dropped. Bad pitch on the green. Horrible first putt about 10 feet bye and then made the 10-footer for double (+5)
#18 - Good driver down the right side. 3-hybrid nicely into the wind. Good chip to 3-feet, made birdie (+4)
THOUGHTS: Hit a lot of good shots, but couldn't get putts to fall. Part of me is disappointed, but 5 of the last 6 rounds (18 holes) I've played are on courses I've never played before and then World Woods, which I played once a year ago (and on new tees).
Tomorrow I'm probably going to play North Shore. Hopefully I won't have 40 mph winds.
37-39 = 76 (+4)
