I just joined Rio Pinar with their summer membership program. It was a gorgeous June day in Orlando playing with my dad. Had a late night and my sinuses were bothering me a bit. Rio Pinar is an old school course, lots of little dog legs, smaller greens. It's where they used to hold the old Citrus Open on the PGA Toru. Plays to 7,001 yards. Front 9 is actually pretty easy and the back 9 is much much harder.
#1 - Hit a decent driver that over-drawed a bit into the left rough. Hit a hard 3-wood that over-drawed and was pin high, but left of the green. Nice pitch with a LW to 3-feet and made birdie (-1)
#2 - Hit a driver well, but it pushed and faded a bit. Had a shot at the green, but had to carve it around the tree a tad. Good 7-iron that went to the back fringe. Almost made the birdie and took a par (-1)
#3 - Hooked a 7-iron, mainly because the tee was uneven, but it hooked at the flag. Went to the back of the green and the pin was up front. Good 2-putt from 40-50 feet and made par (-1)
#4 - Good driver down the right side. SW in and almost made a birdie and made par (-1)
#5 - Big driver down the middle. PW in. I was 133 or so away and it went short. Afterwards I decided to mess around with my Titleist 690 MB PW as the Mizuno TN-87 isn't cutting it. Almost made this putt and took par (-1)
#6 - Played a driver to cut and I double crossed it a bit. Laid up with a nice 5-iron from a tough lie. Decent LW to 8-feet and made a tough putt for birdie (-2)
#7 - Had my KZG U-wood which I thought would be too much club. That made me apprehensive and I skied it. Good pitch to 8-feet. Thought I pulled the putt, but it went in. (-2)
#8 - Good driver down the middle. Tried a flop with a LW, but the pin was cut so far up front that I could only get it to 15 feet away. Not a good putt and made par (-2)
#9 - Hooked a driver into the woods. Hit the U-wood out. Great pitch with a LW and then sunk a 15 foot par putt (-2)
#10 - This is a really tough par-5. Long (580 yards), very tight fairway and has a creek in front of the green and is a tough green to putt on. I toe-pushed a driver into the woods. Hit a 9-iron into the fairway. Then hit a 5-iron okay, but it found the green. 2-putted for par (-2)
#11 - Low draw into the fairway bunker. Hit it out of there. Terrible pitch. 2-putted for bogey (-1)
#12 - Decent driver into the left rough. Hit an 8-iron to the back fringe. Nice Rule of 12 chip (9-iron) to 2-feet and made par (-1)
#13 - Another tee that is uneven and I hit a 4-iron well, but hooked it into the bunker. Good bunker shot that didn't spin, but made a tough 7-footer for par (-1)
#14 - Weird. It was kinda hard to hit the ball long at Rio Pinar because the rough is sorta thick. And then I hit a bomb here, about 330 yards. Almost drove the 12th green. Punched a 5-iron hard under the trees and it stopped short of the bunker. Good semi-flop with a LW to 2-feet and made par (-1)
#15 - Hooked a driver into the left woods. Hit a high 5-iron over the trees into the green side bunker. Blasted out, but went way bye. Had the read, but about 6 inches short and made bogey (E)
#16 - Huge driver into the wind, about 310 yards. Hit a 3-wood a little thin but in good shape. Good LW that didn't stop, but had 10 feet to the cup. Made another tough putt for birdie (-1)
#17 - Caught a 4-iron a little off the heel. Tough par-3 because if you miss the green it's a very difficult up-n-down. flubbed a tough flop shot. Then an ugly lob shot and made a 20 footer to save bogey (E)
#18 - Nice 300 yard driver down the middle. Hit a 9-iron to about 25 feet. 2-putted for par (E)
THOUGHTS: Last night at home I feel I made a huge discovery in the problems I have with my backswing. I think the big part is that before last night it wasn't something that I always did. So, I think it made it difficult to spot and now that I understand the problem I think we can make some serious progess in the next month or so.
And it worked well on the front 9. I think I know why I was struggling to execute it on the back 9 and started to figure it out on the last 3 holes where I hit some big drives. And something today had me smoother and more rhythmic on the pitches and flops. First time I've felt like my old college days with my short game around the green.
All in all a good time. My dad won't admit it, but I don't think he liked World Woods last week because it's just too hard for him. I think he enjoyed Rio Pinar. Afterwards we hit Giovanni's which has some good Italian food and decent pizza, but nothing like NY pizza. The search continues...
