Course: The Villages Palmer Legends - Riley Grove & Cherry Hill
Irons: Srixon Pro 100
Ball: Bridgestone B330
Played up with my dad and a friend of ours today. I generally like Arnie as a course designer and this course, a 27 holer, is pretty darn good. The only problem I have with it is the green design which lends way to a lot of 'illegal' pin positions. They just don't get any rain up there. However, the fairways are in great condition for such little rain and the tees are decent. The greens are kinda mediocre.
We played Riley Grove first and then went onto Cherry Hill. Weather was really nice on Riley Grove as the breeze kept us cool. But on Cherry Hill the breeze stopped and it got sweltering hot.
#1 - Decent driver down the middle. Decent PW to about 20 feet. Great AimPoint read here as it was puting into a saddle slope and broke twice and I read it right into the cup. (-1)
#2 - Decent driver down the middle. Wind was in our face. Hit a 6-iron a little fat and wound up in good shape, just short of the green. Chip and a putt for par (-1)
#3 - Big driver down the middle. Hit a LW and it hit the slope on the green and went to the back. Impossible pin position and I knocked my first putt about 12 feet bye. But, I made the putt. (-1)
#4 - Got a little under this one, but it was probably good because I don't think driver is the right play here. Just caught a 3-wood slightly off the heel and it cut into the greenside bunker. Long bunker shot. Probably should not have opened the face, but I found the green. 2-putted for par (-1)
#5 - Good driver down the middle. Wind was blowing more than I thought and it went into the greenside bunker. Good bunker shot. Putt moved on me the wrong way because the green's condition and madge bogey (E)
#6 - Decent 8-iron pin high. 2-putt for par (E)
#7 - Nice 3-wood down the middle. Apparently, I hit a 160 yard 9-iron here over the green. Didn't really have a shot. pitched on and 2-putted for bogey (+1)
#8 - Flushed a 4-iron. That left me with an impossible 40 foot putt. 3-putted for bogey (+2)
#9 - Good driver down the middle. Kinda chickened out with a 3-wood. Tried to flop from hardpan, but wound up short. Chipped on with a LW and made the par save (+2)
#10 - Pushed a driver into the woods. Punched out with a 4-iron. Flushed a PW to 10 feet and made the birdie (+1)
#11 - Hit a driver well, but it went thru the fairway and into the fwy bunker. Hit out, but well short. Mediocre pitch and a 2-putt for bogey (+2)
#12 - Decent driver down the left side. Flushed a 9-iron to 8-feet, made the birdie (+1)
#13 - Big driver down the middle. Hit a decent SW on to the green and 2-putted for par. (+1)
#14 - Ugly 8-iron into the left bunker. Blasted onto the green, 2-putted for bogey (+2)
#15 - We never saw my tee shot go. It felt good, but we found it and it was wayyy left and into the 13th fairway. Hooked a 3-iron into the bunker. Blasted on, 2-putted for bogey (+3)
#16 - Hit a good driver, got jobbed and it went into the fairway bunker. Just got it on the green with a SW. 2-putted for par (+3)
#17 - Flushed a 4-iron at the flagstick to about 12 feet. Made the birdie (+2)
#18 - Good driver down the middle. Hit a 3-wood hard, but pulled it a bit. Put it on the green and 2-putted for par (+2)
THOUGHTS: I actually hit the ball pretty well. But, I kept on getting bad break after bad break and it was tough to make putts with the greens being so bumpy. they had a tournament before us, so they had tournament pins in. I think the Titleist 690 MB pitching wedge is working for me.
