Beautiful weather here. Unreal, upper 80's no wind, no humidity.
This course isn't one of my favorites, but Golfnow for 21 dollars with a cart made it too good to pass up. Since I moved back to N. Idaho from Tucson I have only touched a few times and this is my third time playing, one was a scramble so I don't count it. Fairly easy course in regards to it being wide, and wall to wall grass. Big trees and thick rough are the only real concern. In other words, it is a course that makes you want to go at it hard off the tee. Only about 6700 yds? Not the usual course for me. I am much more of a hybrid/ 3 wood guy off the tee. Mostly because of where I played in Tucson, 49er, was so tight and not long, and very penal off the tee if you missed.
So this is where my round description is going to take a detour from the normal format that has been laid out here. Richie, if you need to move it fine, not sure where to put it? I am mostly just ranting here and will probably regret writing it, but here goes.
Started off OK. Short hole, 365 slightly dogleg left, but a weird sort of drop off/landing area around 235 or so? Hit a so so 3hy and had a gap wedge left. Quit on it and ended up short by about 15 yards. No biggie, getting up and down is pretty much my bread and butter so I am actually sort of excited about the chance chip here. But was that swing? I didn't really do the left wrist cock at the beginning that Iteach has been talking about? Get up there, go thru usual routine, use the normal Utley chip method, it totally checks up on me and comes up short way short? Weird. 2 putt bogey.
#2 Rather non descript 178 yd par 3. Small hill on the left forcing the green to run uphill to downhill L-R with a small pond on the right. Pretty easy. 6 iron pin high to the right. Tried to S&T my irons as usual but it didn't draw? 3 jack bogey? Greens are nice. Why can't I putt yet? Rust?
#3 Waiting on every shot and every tee. Mind starting to wander, thinking about swings. 390 downhill par 4 trees on the ride and left, but another let her rip hole. I go to my 3 wood as is normal, but pull it hard to the left. Solid, but way left. In bounds, but what was that swing? Got 115 left, gap to the front edge, 2 putt par.
#4 Par 4 410 dog leg left. Join up with another group because we are waiting again. They are playing a set of tees up. Not really feeling nervous, but totally just pull hook one about 15 yards left with my driver. I never really hit driver well. It always gets me in trouble. Did I S&T on my set up? What happened? Re-tee, Think easy swing don't worry about it. What was that thing that Denny had me doing last fall? Oh yeah, try that. Totally different swing, all 3 players comment on how different that looked. Pull the crap out of it. It's inbounds, but I am standing knee high in weeds out of bounds to hit it. 8 iron on and two putts. Double, 6.
#5 Par 5. Forget how long? 535? About 230 of carry over water just to reach the fairway. Other guys hit from up tees. I am standing back there by myself thinking about what is going on. Am I cocking the wrist? Did I keep the tees pinched under the arms through out the swing? What did I read on that Golfwrx thread about the Right arm takeaway? Should I try and get a bit more axis tilt with this driver? Finally, my turn to hit. I just wail away, pull it into a bunker on the left. Actually my feet are in and the ball is on the right edge. Hybrid up to 90. Wedge it on two putts. Now I am just reeling. What was that swing? How did I end up on my back foot and spun out?
#6 Par 4 420 uphill dogleg right. Waiting around again. Should I just hit a 3 wood, forget the S&T swing and set up normal because that always gives me a fade? Wait there is wind in our face. Grab driver, yank it way ob left. Re tee. Yank it way left. Same drill. I am ob ball is in. swing thru the weeds. Bunker. 2 putts. Triple.
And so it goes. Now every single swing feels different. Don't know what I am doing? Not committed to anything, but can't stop it. Short game has left me. If am going to go back to my S&T, I need to stop over swinging and get more left in every facet. Iteach says I need more axis tilt at set up. What was that thing that Sullv21 said about getting the left arm more away from chest if you are trying to get pitchy? I am actually thinking about threads from this board while I am playing! I am thinking about Richie thread about his buddies and how they focused on 3 things to break 80 all the time. What were they?
Rest of the day dragged on. 47 40. Almost 6hrs to finish. I was so bummed. I am now trending up toward 11 again after getting down to 8. I haven't been practicing or playing since moving, so I know I can't expect much. Lack of short game practice is really showing. That has been my favorite thing for the last three years in Tucson. I feel dumb for not following through with Denny A while I had the chance. Life kept getting in the way. I really like Iteach's approach the best, just wish I could see him. I am obsessed with S&T, but keep talking myself out of it. McHatton sure has a lot of good points? So does Martin Chuck? My hands and wrists were painful from squeezing the grip so hard yesterday? Then I see the Quinton thing yesterday. I wasted/spend 5 years trying to do his original passive arms thing, then was there when RST was born. It all made sense. Then he started ripping S&T, that's when i bailed. What is the right way?
I can't stop the urge to hit. Passive arms sounds great, just can't seem to get it? I seriously think my grip is holding me back. I can't feel any wrist cock and don't really understand what the role of the arms are in the back swing. I do understand it, but I can't find MY PIECES to make it work. Now I am stuck in this golfing wasteland with no range and the shortest season ever. Seriously considering a new Mountain Bike.
There, I said it. Probably come back here and erase this. I am addicted to reading about golf and theory. Yet my inability to apply a set of principals to myself is killing me. It shouldn't be this hard. I can help others hit the ball better, but I can't help myself.
Taking this week off and maybe next week. At least the weather is awesome and there is a lake out the front door.
