Course: Rio Pinar CC
Clubs: '83 Hogan Personals
Ball: Srixon Z-Star
We got rained out yesterday up in The Villages, so I went back home and decided to play Rio Pinar today, where it didn't rain on Saturday
It was threatening rain, but never did. Course is still a bit wet in spots. About 80* but near 100% humidity. A real test to keep your grip from not sweating. I used the Hogan Personals today. I find I hit them a good 1-club shorter. I was also using the 9015D driver as well. I think it's pretty good, but I think I hit the Speedline better. I videoed my swing and there is massive amounts of improvement. I've almost got the backswing down and the downswing has a ways to go, but still big improvements. I'll probably go into that in tomorrow's journal entry.
#1 - Big driver down the middle followed up by a 3-iron flushed into the green. Lipped out the eagle putt and made birdie (-1)
#2 - Hit it hard, but pulled the driver into the left rough. Flushed a PW, but it found the bunker. The bunkers were washed but there was still plenty of sand in them. I tried to hit further behind it, but that didn't work. I think on those shots you may want to take a little less sand and just swing much softer. Bad chip and a bad bogey putt and a double (+1)
#3 - Didn't quite catch an 8-iron which went short of the green, but the pin was up front. so I had a makeable chip. And almost did that and made par (+1)
#4 - Good driver down the left side. Hit a SW well, but a little short of where I wanted. I then drained a nice 35 footer for birdie (E)
#5 - Good driver down the middle. caught a pw a little thin, but found the green. 2-putted for par (E)
#6 - Hit a driver hard, but pulled it into the woods. Punched out. then hit a 6-iron to about 2-feet...great shot. And made the birdie (-1)
#7 - Hit a 3-iron hard but it was an over-draw. Took a LW on the pitch to make sure I kept it below the cup and did that to 5-feet and made the par save (-1)
#8 - Good driver down the middle. Hit a LW to 5-feet and made the birdie (-2)
#9 - Over-drawed a driver into the left rough. I had an opening with a 5-iron punch and figured to go for it because *most likely* if I hit the trees it would still bounce out okay. I hit the trees and it kicked out okay. Flushed a SW to 5-feet and saved par. I told my playing partner it was my 'belated tribute to Seve.' (-2)
#10 - Hit a good driver with a draw, but it bounced left and went behind the collection of trees on the left. Hit a 7-iron over the trees. Then I hooked a 6-iron left of the green. Good pitch to 3-feet and saved par (-2)
#11 - Hit a driver well, but pulled it into the fairway bunker. Hit what was a great shot with a 9-iron around a tree onto the green and 2-putted from about 40 feet for par (-2)
#12 - Good driver down the left side. Hit a good 8-iron but a little too far. Rule of 12 chip (PW) to 3-feet and saved par (-2)
#13 - Hit a 5-iron well, but pushed it. The tee on this hole sucks because it's basically an undulating crown. Good flop shot to 7-ifeet and drained the par save (-2)
#14 - Big driver down the middle. Hit a nice 1/2 SW to 15 feet. Good putt, but just missed and made par (-2)
#15 - Good driver down the middle. Flushed an 8-iron but pushed it. I've found that low anchor points are often easy to find at Rio Pinar because on almost every hole there there's like a dead weed that grows exactly where the low anchor is. I noticed the low anchor the first time I played on #6 when it was pouring. I then noticed that the low anchor on that hole has a dead weed by it. Then I tried to see some other low anchors and noticed some other dead weeds growing there.
Well, that's what happened here. I hit this one too hard, but it still went in, making a 35 footer for birdie (-3)
#16 - Cut a driver into the woods and punched out. Hit a 3-hybrid from a poor lie nicely. Good SW and then just missed the par save (-2)
#17 - Eh, went back to some old swing mechanics stuff and hooked the 4-iron left. Really good flop to about 4-feet, but missed the par save (-1)
#18 - hit a driver hard, but it drawed on me a bit and over on the left side tree limbs overhang. It hit a tree and kicked into the fairway. Nice little 6-iron to 20 feet and 2-putted for par (-1)
THOUGHTS: I actually hit the ball better than it looks. In fact, I think I only missed the sweetspot twice, both on shots a little thin. I think that the Harrison Saga is probably a tad bit too stiff for me (I got it in X-Stiff flex) and there's. My putting was better today, but my speed was a struggle. Short Game around the green is superb. I think for the most part, the only thing I'm struggling with is with the driver right now. If i could get one good round of driver play, I could probably go below 68.
