Wanted to get another practice round in at Shingle Creek. Part of me didn't want to go into the qualifier with 1 round and it being a 68. I hit it about as bad as I have hit the ball in the past 3 months on the range beforehand. It was very humid out as well. Kinda messed up my confidence going into the round.
#1 - Hit a driver well and it was down the middle, but I never saw it go. Tried to choke up on an 8-iron and had the club, but pushed it to the right. Good chip and putt for par (E)
#2 - Good driver down the middle. Hit a 3-wood into the greenside bunker. However, it was a difficult, longer greenside bunker shot. Hit a pretty good one but got a bad bounce. 2-putted for par. But, I got a good read on what that putt does as that looks like a good tournament pin position. (E)
#3 - So-so pull cut that wound up down the middle. So-so 8-iron to 30 feet. Hit the first putt well short. Then hit a putt on line and that was short and 3-putted for bogey (+1)
#4 - Big driver down the middle. Just murdered this one. Probably about 325 yards and that is on soft fairways. Hit a 3-iron but over-drawed it into the greenside bunker. Hit a good bunker shot to 5-feet and made the birdie (E)
#5 - Flushed a 4-iron to the back of the green. 2-putted for par (E)
#6 - The group ahead of me let me thru and I hate having to go thru that. And I hit an ugly cut into the right rough. Just got a 4-iron up by the green. Great pitch to 5-feet and made par (E)
#7 - Okay. The tee box on this hole is right behind the #6 green. As I'm about to hit, a ball flys over my shoulder full bore. That would've been painful. I think most people would get upset for them not yelling fore...but, it was on a shot he had too much club and I think those are always impossible to judge mid-flight. That rattled me a bit and I hit a real ugly tee shot right. But, another great pitch to 5-feet and made the par putt (E)
#8 - I've got to learn how to play this hole with a driver off the tee. It's longer that it says and I hit a good 3-wood that left me with a tough 5-iron into the green. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and hit driver so I can have 9-iron into this green. And the green is a tough one to hit into, so the shorter the club, the better. I hit an ugly 5-iron into the drink. Dropped, and hit another great pitch to 8-feet and made the bogey putt (+1)
#9 - The good news is that this hole is relatively easy if you know the hole. I hit a good 3-wood off the tee. I Hit a 7-iron because the pin was all of the way in the back. I got lucky and found the green. But, I realized if I miss the green you have almoswt no shot of getting up and down, so the play is to go for the middle of the green if the pin is in back. I then started hitting putts from the middle of the green to the back pin and I got that read. Anyway, made par (+1)
#10 - Skanky driver in the right rough. 9-iron short of the green. Chip and a putt for par (+1)
#11 - Good driver down the middle. Hit a nice PW to 8-feet and drained the birdie putt (E)
#12 - Ugly driver right (hit it hard though). Took a drop off the cart path and crushed a 3-wood. Hit an 80 yard lob wedge into the bunker. Buried lie, skulled it over. tough lie and flopped over. Chip and a putt for double. Awful golf (+2)
#13 - Hit a driver well but in the left rough. I learned you need to avoid the left rough because the lie can be next to impossible. The ball was above my feet, at knee level. Just hit it down by the green and it's not an easy chip. 2-putted for bogey (+3)
#14 - Nice driver down the middle. Flushed a 6-iron to 15 feet and drained the birdie (+2)
#15 - Nice 5-iron to the middle of the green. Misread the putt a tad, but made par (+2)
#16 - Crushed a driver, but a little left which lengthens the hole. Ugly 3-iron into the greenside bunker. Another tough, long bunker shot . Got it on and 2-putted for par (+2)
#17 - Caught a 3-iron a smidge fat and almost went into the bunker. I actually would've been better off in the bunker because I had a tough lie. But, like I posted last week, you're better off searching for the uphill putt on these tough shots. And that's what I did and made a 5-footer for par (+2)
#18 - Good driver down the middle. Tried to fade an 8-iron and it wasn't that good, but it did find the green in good shape. Misread the putt...can't believe it's straight. But, made par (+2)
THOUGHTS: well, the swing felt like an unfolded lawn chair until #13 or so. got some good information about the course and i think today the pins were more akin to tournament positions which I think is almost invaluable. Afterwards I hit the range at home and I see what my main issues were. I was way off at p2 which can throw off the entire swing. So I'll be working on that tomorrow. Other than that, I feel like it's getting closer and getting better.
