Went up to visit my parents. It's been super hot in the FLA lately. It was hot out here, but this time around it seemed manageable. Probalby because Orlando gets so much more rain the humidity wasn't as bad. Course in decent shape and overall, this is a pretty solid course. I still don't like how they shape these green, leaving you with a lot 4%+ sloped pin positions.
I am hitting it....shitty. For the most part, I just wanted to work on 3 things in my swing and didn't care what happened. I also wanted to work on my putting.
#1 - Toe-draw a driver right by the left bunker. Stance in bunker, ball out of the bunker. Hit a good PW but flew the green. Decent pitch leaving me an uphill putt and sank the 7-footer for par (E)
#2 - Pushed my driver well right. Had to hit a cut with a 4-iron around the trees and did a good job. So-so chip. Missed the par save (+1)
#3 - Decent driver down the right side. Pushed a 3-wood right of the green. Good pitch to 5-feet, made the birdie (E)
#4 - Flushed a 5-iron to 12 feet. Thought that the putt was going in, but it lipped out. Made par (E)
#5 - Pushed my driver into the hazard. Dropped. Pushed my 5-iron right of the green. Pushed my flop shot and 2-putted for double bogey (+2)
#6 - Flushed a 4-iron, but a little to the right. This course had some very long par-3's with very small greens. Chip was so-so. Went to 5-feet, but a downhill putt and I missed the putt (+3)
#7 - Snap hooked a driver and had another stance in the bunker while the ball was out of the bunker. Tried a 3-wood out of frustration....not good. Then hit a good 3-wood. Tried to hit a flop close, but left it 20 feet bye and downhill. 2-putted for bogey (+4)
#8 - Snap hooked another driver. Hit a 3-hybrid well and right of the green. Impossible pin position and made bogey (+5)
#9 - Snap hooked another driver. Hit a 6-iron flush to about 12 feet and lipped out the birdie putt (+5)
#10 - skied this driver. Then hit a 6-iron nicely to 35 feet. Hit the first putt about 4-feet bye, but made the comebacker (+5)
#11 - OMG, actually hit a good driver here. Nothing really special though. My attack angle is so steep that I can only hit it about 275 when I catch one. Hit a decent PW to 15 feet. Good read, just not enough steam and made par (+5)
#12 - Ugly hole. Low draw off the tee. I was in the fairway, but had an awful like. So of course, out of frustration I try a 3-wood. Hit it about 120 yards. Had a 5-iron that I pushed. Tough shot and I needed my SW instead of my LW, but said screw it and tried the LW and went about 40 feet away. Good putt and made bogey (+6)
#13 - Bad swing with an 8-iron, but wound up safe and okay. Good pitch to 3-feet, made the par save (+6)
#14 - Actually had a good driver here. Hit a PW to 15 feet. Bad read and made par (+6)
#15 - Another good driver here. Was in between PW and SW and took a PW and hit it poorly and missed the green. Weak chip and made bogey (+7)
#16 - Very good driver here. Stupid mosquito went right in my eye at about p5 or so and I hooked it. Actually wound up okay. Hit a SW to 8-feet, but a bad putt and made par (+7)
#17 - Flushed a 3-iron into a tiny green. First putt broke probably about 6-feet, but i left myself with an uphiller and made par (+7)
#18 - Best driver of the day. Almost back to the old drives I hit on that one. It probably would've gone about 285 or if it hadn't caught the fairway bunker. Hit a 7-iron up against the lip. Impossible pin position but I thought I got robbed on a good pitch that went off to the back fringe. These greens were no faster than an 8 on the stimp and this pin was on such a slope that I barely tapped a 12 footer that lipped out and went about 12 feet bye. But I made the bogey coming back (+8)
THOUGHTS: Well...worst recorded round of the year and it's not coming at the best of times. I will say that I thought my putting was pretty good. The greens at The Villages are almost impossible to putt really well on. It's a bunch of ballstriking courses.
The iron play was surprisingly good. In fact, I think it's safe to say I hit the long irons far better thant he short irons. I decided to get some Lamkin Crossline cord grips last night. I've found that they are generally the best in the heat and rain. I also added 3 wraps of tape under the left hand to prevent that from getting too strong. The Lamkin Crossline cords are not easy to put on with an air compressor, mainly because they are tough to intially put on over the shaft.
But, the driver play was awful. Probably the worst it has been since 2009. I did think I got some of it sorted out towards the end. I'm probably going to see if I can get on Trackman next Sunday and go from there.
