I played a couple of courses in The Villages on Saturday and Sunday and posted back-to-back rounds of 70 (-2). I don't go over those rounds here because I can't remember the shots and the course that well since I've only played those courses once before.
I got home this morning, took a nap, got a bite to eat and played some golf. I haven't been on the range since Friday. Warm, but very breezy about a 2-3 club wind.
#1 - Good driver down the right side with the wind in our face. Decent 3-wood up by the bunker. Tough pin position and tried to hit it under the cup, but went a little long. Good putt, but just missed and made par (E)
#2 - Good driver down the middle but the wind held it back and this driver doesn't work that well with the win. Toed a 5-iron just short of the green. Hit the pitch too hard and 2-putted for bogey (+1)
#3 - Hit a so-so 7-iron onto the green. This is where AimPoint helps because couldn't believe the putt stayed straight and after I hit it I examined it and could see where it was a straight putt. Made par (+1)
#4 - Eh, thin pushy-cut into the woods. Punched out. Hit a SW on and 2-putted for bogey (+2)
#5 - Ht a 3-wood down the middle. Toed a 7-iron into the bunker. Blasted out. Then lipped out a 5-footer and made bogey (+3)
#6 - Good driver down the middle. Hit a hybrid to lay up. Hit a good LW to 10 feet, but a downhill putt that I just missed and made par (+3)
#7 - Good hybrid that just missed the green. Chip and a putt for par (+3)
#8 - Good driver down the middle. Mediocre SW to 20 feet and made par (+3)
#9 - Good driver down the middle. Another toed shot with an iron and hit the green and 2-putted for par (+3)
#10 - Hit this driver well, but it drawed on me which was a surprise. Punched a 5-iron beautfully thru and under the pine trees. Flushed a 9-iron onto the green. Had the read, but missed about 1/2 an inch short (+3)
#11 - Pull draw with the driver, hit a tree and found the fairway. Hit an 8-iron onto the green and 2-putted for par (+3)
#12 - Good driver down the middle. Toed another iron shot short of the green. Hit the pitch too far, but made the comebacker for par (+3)
#13 - Today was labor day, so the greenkeeper wasn't in a good mood as the pin positions were difficult and this one was borderline hideous. I hit the green with a flushed 4-iron (damn, these irons feel great). It was easily my best iron swing of the day...and I was left with a 75-foot putt. Since I was playing by myself, I couldn't tend the flag. Although I did find that when you are really far away on a putt, just concentrate on the flagstick when you are trying to gauge how hard to hit it. I did that, by chance, and knocked it to 2-feet and made par (+3)
#14 - Excuse my french, but...
I HATE FUCKING FAIRWAY BUNKERS.
I hit one...I'm up against the lip and barely get it out. Then I hit a nice 9-iron onto the green and 2-putt for bogey (+4)
#15 - Okay but....
I HATE FUCKING FAIRWAY BUNKERS.
If it was not for bad luck, I would have no luck at all. Yesterday and I went up aganst the lip of the fairway bunker twice on my only 2 shots in the fairway bunker (and one was on a good drive and a hideous bounce). So today I go in the fairway bunker twice...and hit the lip twice. And both were not that bad of a drive.
The odds of that happening I would imagine are slim...yet I find a way.
So again, the ball hits the lip and barely gets out. I then hit a nice 8-iron that stays on the tier. And this time I hit a good putt and knock it in to save par (+4)
#16 - good driver down the middle. Hit a good, but low 3-wood down the middle. hit a SW to about 12 feet and make the birdie (+3)
#17 - I love these long irons. I flushed a 3-iron on the money and went to about 15 feet. Good putt, but just missed and made par (+3)
#18 - Good driver down the middle. Hit a 5-iron kinda crappy but it went okay and found the green. 2-putted from about 50 feet and made par (+3)
THOUGHTS: It was pretty breezy the last 3 days and I still shot -1 combined in the breeze and a couple of courses I am unfamiliar with.
However, I think I needed to get back to the range as I was probably starting to fall into some old habits. I'm pretty positive p2 is way off and some things need to work. Although I think I discovered something as well.
I think the irons are great because I can still hit a good shot even when I don't hit one well, but I can certanly feel that and use that feedback. The driver...I think is something I can play with just in case, but Talamonti has another shaft coming to me and I'm going to try it in that head. The Harrison ShotMaker is the real deal.
