Okay...I've worked with many good instructors, and I have yet to "fix my golf swing". I've been on some forums, and picked the brains of some very good golfers, but can't seem to get a feel that will get me on the right path. Issues: Move off ball (sway) Lift arms to top. Right elbow gets away from my body Steep coming down Hips stall (never been able to clear hips through impact). Then flip and come out of it resulting in toe shots, swipes to the right, and big pulls. Have a golf fitness background, so no limitations. Would love to shallow plane coming down, and be able to ROTATE freely through impact. Able to practice a lot (I'm lucky for sure). Here's a link to a couple of ugly golf swings. www.youtube.com/user/bestgolftrainingaidsBelieve it or not, play to a 7 with this swing, including horrible putting, so feel like there's hope.

there's always hope. where do you live. Arizona? Where in Arizona Lots of good golf instructors in AZ. If you are anywhere Tucson, I can very strongly recommend Denny Alberts. I fly all the way from NYC/CT to work with him. He cured me of some of the same problems you are facing in one weekend. You can reach him on this site

Beginning to think it's the student, and considering picking up ping pong instead

i am quite sure you haven't worked with nearly as many as I have. I play ping pong, but prefer golf. i looked at your swing several times and there is hope -- especially if you are athletic; but to be honest, you have to start from scratch with the right grip (much stronger than you would think, because without a strong grip you will invariably fan the club open on the way back and from that moment on you'll be timing the rotation to close the clubface and it will be flip city for you. once you have the right grip, the next order of business is to identify the right motion and after that the next order of business is to construct a swing which has to start very small. the big thing i see is the move back being inside then up and then you come down outside and somewhat over the top-ish and the transition is where the downward path is determined TD

Lets look at each issue and some possible fixes.
Move off the ball: Caused by letting the left knee move outside of the right foot. Try to keep the foundation triangles intact as you go back. That is the triangle formed by your two feet and somewhere around your belly button. Initial weight distribution should be equal left to right and from toes to heals.
Lift arms to the top: Should not happen if you are pivoting back properly.
Right elbow gets away from body: This is ok providing that the right forearm is somewhat vertical, but no more of an angle than your spine. Also try to keep the angle of the forearm to the upper arm at around 90 degrees or a little less.
Steep coming down: Your might be cupping your wrists. Try to keep the relationship of your left wrist to your left forearm the same all the way to the top of the backswing.
Hips stall: Actually, the hips do slow down just before impact in better players. Your problem may be that they are not getting started soon enough. Try starting you downswing by turning your right hip.
Flip coming out: Think about hitting through beyond the ball rather than at the ball.
Hope some of this helped.
