Course: North Shore GC
Stimp: 8
Ball: Srixon Z-Star
Played golf with my ole man and an old neighbor of ours from NY. Absolutely gorgeous outside, 80, sunny and almost no breeze. I just had a lesson with George on Saturday, so I wanted to try out some of the stuff we worked on. I also wanted to use the Wishon 919THI driver
#1 - Made good contact, but pushed it. Caught a SW a little heavy, but to 15 feet. Had the read, but didn't trust it and made par (E)
#2 - Crushed the 929HS 3-wood with a little draw. Went about 270 yards. Pushed a PW, but found the green. Good read, but not enough gas and made par (E)
#3 - This hole has given me some troubles so I played it safer than I normally would and hit it pretty well down the left side. Unfortunately, I was left with a very uphill lie and I hit a hybrid that I pushed a little and it went a mile high and missed the green. Good pitch with a LW to 5-feet and made the par save (E)
#4 - Big driver right down the middle, about 310 yards. Pushed a 1/2 PW to 30 feet, not a very good shot. Not a bad read, but needed a little more break and a little more gas and I made par (E)
#5 - A lower ballflight off the tee, but I found the Birdie Zone and the fairway. Flagged a nice SW to a foot and made birdie (-1)
#6 - Slight push with a hybrid that went into the bunker. Some thick sand here and I just got it out. Thought I had the read, but didn't play it quite high enough and made bogey (E)
#7 - Good driver down the left side. Uphill lie with a 3-wood and I hit a bit of a hook, but wound up okay. Hit a LW to 25 feet. Mis-read...optical illusion. Made par (E)
#8 - Caught a 9-iron a little thin, but found the green. Just missed the birdie putt and made par (E)
#9 - Hit a driver really hard, but it cut on me and went into the H2O. Hooked a 3-wood from a difficult lie. I then had a lie in the rough where the ball was fluffed up about as high as a ball can and I hit a 9-iron on the money, but couldn't compress it like I wanted to and the ball went to the back of the green. However, I lipped out a 40 footer. Thankfully it hit the cup and that left me with a 3-foot bogey save (+1)
#10 - Big driver down the pipe and in great position. Hit a LW to 6-feet and made the birdie (E)
#11 - Hooked a driver into the woods. Tried to punch out, but hit a tree and knocked it backwards. Hit a hybrid into the bunker. Weak bunker shot. Great 1st putt that almost went in. But made bogey (+1)
#12 - Kind of a conundrum here. I think right now, if I was playing for $$$ or in a tournament, I would bust out the driver on this hole and try to treat it like a par-5. However, since one of my 2012 goals is to become an elite 3-wood player, I took the 3-wood here. Hit it hard, but hooked it. I actually had a shot and right now...I would just punch out and play it like a par-5. But, I hit the tree and bounced back. Punched out. Hit a SW on and took and just missed a 10 footer. Double Bogey (+3)
#13 - After hitting a few hooks on the last 3 holes, I aimed a little down the right side and hit one straight and into the woods. Punched out beautifully and found the green. Putt broke a ton and made par (+3)
#14 - The improvements in my swing showed here as I hit a shot that started drawing, but stopped and found the left part of the green. Before I would have seen in draw into the water. Another mis-read, but I thought it was a tricky 'walking the tight wire' type of putt. I did make the 5-footer for par (+3)
#15 - Good driver right down the middle. Decided to 'go for it' and hit a 3-wood well, but over-drawed it into the water. Dropped. Hit a LW short. Chipped on and made a nice 5-footer for bogey (+4)
#16 - Big 3-wood off the tee (normally don't hit it here). This one went about 260 yards down the middle. Hit a SW nicely to 5-feet and made a slippery putt for birdie (+3)
#17 - Tried to hit a 6-iron high and I did, but over-drawed it a bit. Didn't matter, it kicked off the hill and found the green. Had the read, but not enough gas and made par (+3)
#18 - hit a driver very hard and it cut on me. I wound up in the 10th fairway, but I probably hit it about 300 yards. Ball well below my feet and I caught it a little thin, but found the green. Had a 50 foot putt that I had the right idea, but not enough break. Still wound up to 3-feet and made par (+3)
THOUGHTS: Not too bad considering we played a 5-hour round and my playing partners played poorly and we had to look for their balls throughout the round. Tough to get a rhythm doing so.
I think the Wishon driver is something that if I take a very good swing I can hit some excellent drives with. But, i don't think the shaft quite fits me. I think it's a little too stiff for me. It is nice to see a driver get some roll.
The swing didn't seem too bad. I'll need to check the video and see what it looks like. Way too many impeded shots today and that killed my score more than anything.
