Wind was blowing at 30 mph. This is the 3rd Sunday in a row where the wind has been gusting at an incredible rate. I guess I've got my practice in if I ever plan on playing in Scotland. Well, that and it would have to be about 20-degrees colder....in July.
I was armed with my new Wishon 949MC 3-wood with the UST Mamiya VTS 75 Red Shaft (X-Stiff). I also forgot my AimPoint aimchart.
#1 - A crazy cross-wind. I took my hybrid out and it hooked a mile and went nowhere into the wind. Hit a 5-iron short. Good pitch onto the green and made a 5-footer for par (E)
#2 - Push-cut with the wind and almost went O.B. I had to hit over a mound and tried to do it with my hybrid, but it skipped off the mound and went nowhere. Hit a 5-iron into the greenside bunker. Blasted out and 2-putted for bogey (+1)
#3 - Hit a 5-iron just short of the green. Chipped to about a foot and made par (+1)
#4 - Had the wind behind me here and smashed a 3-wood. Thing went about 290 yards with the tail wind. Hit a 6-iron onto the green. Had the read, but not enough gas and made par (+1)
#5 - Hit a good drive into a quarter wind down the middle. Hit a 6-iron that seemed to hang in the wind for forever. Horrible pin position and just missed the birdie try (+1)
#6 - I've been working on aiming left off the tee and not hooking it, but I hooked it here. Still wound up fine. Then I smashed a 3-wood to about 120 yards. Nothing like a 120 yard punch 7-iron pin-high. Just missed the birdie (+1)
#7 - Pulled a driver here. There are 2 tall and skinny trees here and I took a PW and hit right thru the gap onto the green. Really, a tough shot, but makeable. You just have to have the balls to do. Had the read, but left it short. But, I finally realized how much break you have to play on the 2nd putt and made par (+1)
#8 - One of those swings where you catch yourself using old swing mechanics mid-swing and then try to alter it, but it's too late. Still, I hit a 4-iron well and found the green. Tough 1st putt, but got it to 2-feet and made par (+1)
#9 - Here I concentrated on the backswing mechanics after messing them up on the last hole and forgot about the downswing mechanics and hit one a mile, but pushed the hell out of it. Hit a 4-iron well, but missed the green left. Good pitch to 5-feet and saved par (+1)
#10 - Big drive right down the middle that turned over nicely. Then a nice 3-wood to about 70 yards. Hit a SW a little long and had the read, but hit it a little too hard. (+1)
#11 - Hit one of those below the CoG drives that spins a lot and didn't get much roll. Hit a 3-iron onto the green. Good putt to a foot and made par (+1)
#12 - Good 3-iron to the right side of the green. REEEE-freaking-DICULOUS pin position. But, I made the putt. Probably one of the best putts I ever made. Good thing because if it didn't go in it was going about 12-feet past. (E)
#13 -Decided to hit a driver and nailed one perfectly here. Then hit a SW to the front of the green and sank another birdie putt (-1)
#14 - Tried to play it conservatively, but hit a poor shot into the bunker. Mediocre bunker blast and 2-putted for bogey (E)
#15 - Tried to draw a driver, but hit it straight. Nice 5-iron onto the green. Long 1st, putt and made par (E)
#16 - The wind was blowing so hard that I didn't even make it to the fairway on this drive. Hit a good 3-wood and then a hook PW (wind) to the back of the green. Good read, but left it short. Then made a nice 3-footer for par (E)
#17 - Really good driver here down the middle. Tried to punch-hook a 7-iron but it stayed straight. Wound up chip to 3-feet and saving the par (E)
#18 - I've had plenty of times, without any wind, where I've hit driver-PW into this hole. Here I smashed a driver into the wind. Then I flushed a 4-iron that only went about 155 yards. Poor Rule of 12 chip (8-iron) and 2-putted for bogey (+1)
THOUGHTS: Quite happy with the round. Thought I had something going there after the 2nd birdie in a row. To me, a bit part of playing well into the wind is short game and making good contact. And I blew the round with not getting those as I mis-hit the tee shot on #14 and couldn't get up and down on #18.
