Why is it so hard to hit a golf ball?

The margin for error is so small due to the club and ball design, yet the golfer is punished extremely for error most of the time.
The margin for error is small for baseball, but if I can get a hit 30% of the time...often times due to luck, I can be an All-Star.
Golf if you only hit the ball well 30% of the time, you're a hacker. And if you miss the sweetspot by one dimple, the shot is greatly effected.
Welcome aboard!

Hitting a golf ball is easy - hitting it consistently well is (insert suitable adjective) hard!

For me it is difficult because there's no reactionary athletic moves. I get too jumbled up in my brain trying to make things happen.
I would consider myself a decent athlete. Played collegs baseball and rugby... highschool football, etc. All reactionary sports, athletic. No thinking involved, just act and react.
I have yet to make my swing into an athletic move.

Funny golfbaka mentions that...Homer Kelley said pretty much the same thing in TGM. Another reason why I think hitting a golf ball consistently well is so tough is because there are so many concepts that are completely inaccurate, severely flawed or really not important.
Like I mentioned in my thread 'Swing Concepts You Would Like to See Go Bye Bye', I mentioned that 'keeping your head down' or 'look at the ball' is my #1 bad concept because there's a thought that if you keep your head down, the ball will almost automatically get airborne.
That's COMPLETELY FALSE. There's plenty of video on YouTube of golfers who hit a ground ball or hit a shot fat or shank and have the head down looking at the ball at impact.
Imagine if I said that the key to making free throws in basketball was just looking at the rim as you shoot the ball. You would think that it wouldn't help anybody.
But keeping your head down is the #1 tip that golfers give themselves and each other and that's a big reason why they have such difficulty hitting a golf ball.

It's as tough as you make it.

Why is it so hard to hit a golf ball? It's not hard to hit a golf ball. It's just harder to hit it a long way and exactly the direction you want. It's then made harder by lying on the ground... just sitting there and not moving... making you make the first move... giving you time to think! It's then made even harder because the weather has a big effect i.e. the ball reacts to hard and soft ground differently and also it gets moved in the air by the wind. My advice...? Don't do it - take up an indoor sport where the ball is moving and not lying on the ground - these factors will make it easier to hit the ball. You'll have fun hitting the ball. You won't feel frustrated that one day you can hit a load of rubbish shots and then just one good shot that makes you realise it can be done and keep coming back for more. Right where did I put that squash racket

I think golf is hard also because we swing on an inclined plane. This confuses many of us. Many of us have good biomechanical movements, I think, on a horizontal or vertical plane.
