My dad and I played today in what was some cloudy and dark weather with a good 20 mph breeze. Never rained, just looked shitty out there, but it wasn't too cold out either. The greens were in phenomenal shape.
#1 - Caught this drive a little off the toe and it rolled over the green and onto the cart path. Pitched to about 8-feet, missed the putt and made par (E)
#2 - Low, ugly Villegas-ish tee shot that went down the middle. Followed by a low, ugly Villegas-ish 9-iron to about 20 feet. Good putt, but a little too much speed. Made par (E)
#3 - Good driver down the right side that was just outside the water. Flushed a 9-iron to 15-feet. Good putt that just missed and made par (E)
#4 - Good driver down the middle. We were into the wind and I tried to punch a 5-iron that I stalled on a bit and it hooked a bit and went over the green. Bad bounce on a chip, but made a 12-footer to save par (E)
#5 - This drive was smoked and went into the greenside bunker. I estimate it must have gone close to 350 yards. It was downwind, but not that much. anyway, blasted to 8-feet and missed the putt on a very difficult pin placement (E)
#6 - Flushed a 3-iron to 17 feet and had the line, but a little too hard and made par (E)
#7 - Hit this drive really well, but it landed it a wet area and didn't get much roll. The lie was awful, so I played it safe with a hybrid. I then hit a SW onto the back fringe. First putt was very slow, probably into a heavy grain. Then I made the 4-footer to save par (E)
#8 - Flushed a PW to 12 feet and lipped out the birdie putt (E)
#9 - 611 yards with the wind in our face. I got up there and thought abuot doing a few different things and was never decisive and hooked it left. I was on the cart-path and took a drop. Hit a driver off the deck and hit it well, but it drew on me and hit some trees. Hit a 9-iron out because I can't hit a massive 3-iron hook around the trees like Bubba.
Hit a SW to 15 feet and missed the putt and made bogey (+1)
#10 - Hit this driver low, but perfectly down the left side and had a LW into the green. LW to about 8-feet and just missed (+1)
#11 - Worst drive of the day, steer block-cut, left with a terrible lie. Just punched out and then hit a nice driver off the deck, just short of the greenside bunker. Bad pitch from a bad lie. 2-putted for bogey (+2)
#12 - Big driver, best drive I've ever hit on this hole. It actually went into the rough, but a perfect drive. Hit a choked up PW to about 12-feet and missed the birdie (+2)
#13 - Played it 'smart' and hit a 3-wood to the 150 marker. Hit an 8-iron right on the tier. The first putt broke a mile, but I made the 3-footer for par (+2)
#14 - Thin, ugly low shot that almost went into the water. However, I was putting from the fringe and got it to a couple of inches and kicked-in for par (+2)
#15 - Hit this driver well, but it was a bit of an over-draw. I then hit one of the greatest shots I've ever hit as I hooked a 3-wood perfectly around the trees and over the water onto the green to 12-feet. My dad just about crapped himself. Missed the eagle putt, but made birdie (+1)
#16 - Decided to go for it with the wind at our back and hit a perfect drive that took a poor hop, but I was pin high, just off the green. Chipped with a LW to 7-feet and made the birdie (E)
#17 - Flushed a 6-iron, but the wind pulled it a little left. Hit a great chip to about a foot and kicked in for par (E)
#18 - Smoked driver that went about 315 yards or so. Then flushed an 8-iron to 12-feet. But, missed the birdie putt (E)
THOUGHTS: Even though I had some setbacks this week on the range, I think it worked the best for me because I learned how to prevent them. I think that carried over to today where I hit it quite well and long as some of the new pieces I'm working on started to kick in.
I didn't putt that poorly, but not very well either. I think where I lost going under 70 was on the par-5's where outside of #15, I didn't play well. MetroWest tomorrow.
