Is it more a function of position (ex. Downhill vs. Uphill) and lie (ex. fringe vs. thick rough)? I'm rarely getting up and down when short sided lately.

for me it is more a function of not short siding myself in the first place.

I totally agree. Playing on fast greens this weekend and can't keep the ball on the green sometimes. I need reminders of the obvious each year.

My home course is not real long so it defends it self with crazy fast greens. If I short side myself I just know I am screwed...if I try to get cute I don't get it on the green and I have to do it again. If I take my medicine and just focus on a clean strike that gets me a putt I still have a minimum 15 footer to save par. I have to remember this when I plan my approach shots.

Easy to forget. My game is so far behind my mind/ego. I HATE playing conservatively, but I must at times.

I try to remember that you don't have to hit a great pitch/chip/flop in order to achieve my goal....getting up and in. A lot of the greens in Florida have big slopes to them, so I may hit a chip to 5-feet, but if it's uphill I may have a much easier time making the putt than if I hit it to 3 feet and downhill. Downhill and side hill putts don't have a lot of 'forgiveness' to them. Check thru your AimPoint chart and look at the difference in break on certain green stimps and you'll see dramatic differences in the amount of break in the sidehill and downhill putts than you will at say 5 o'clock or 7 o'clock where it is relatively straight. I may short-side myself, but instead of thinking about hitting the shot close to the pin, I'm much more concerned with leaving myself with an uphill putt. I then 'negotiate' with myself and think something like 'well, at the very worst I want to be inside of 12 feet with an uphill putt.' There's times where you should try to make the chip/pitch or hit it very close. Other times you have to be a little more realistic and find the easiest way to get up and in.
