My dad and I went to play a course that we won free greens fees for in a Fallen Firefighters tournament about a month ago. Course was in really good condition, outside of the greens which were not awful, just awfully slow. The course is very short, only about 6,000 yards, but with fairly long par-3's, no shorter than 163 yards.
#1 - Caught this one a little off the toe, but it went nicely down the middle. Hit a hybrid well, but it went low and into the green side bunker. I had to manipulate around the lip and I hit a pretty good shot to 12-feet and 2-putted for par (E)
#2 - hit this well, but I pushed it. Then a SW to 12-feet and 2-putted for par (E)
#3 - This is an extremely difficult hole. 200 yards into the wind with a wood fence around the front and left side of the green. I didn't hit a 3-iron well, but I was in good shape. Then a SW bump-n-run to a foot and kicked in for par (E)
#4 - Decent driver down the middle. Little punch wedge to 20-feet and 2-putted for par (E)
#5 - Hit a nice draw with a 3-wood off the tee and only had 80 yards to the flag. But, I hit this one well short and was on the front of the green, with about a 50 foot putt. I then hit a really nice putt to a few inches and made par (E)
#6 - Hit a SW to 5-feet, made the birdie (-1)
#7 - Didn't quite catch this one and I was up by the green, but under a treen. Hit a hard bump-n-run with a PW to 10-feet. Poor putt, but made par (-1)
#8 - Flushed a 4-iron to 12 feet. Lipped out the birdie putt (-1)
#9 - Got a bit lucky here as I was aimed further left, thinking that is where I needed to aim, but I pushed it a bit and wound up down the middle. I was thinking too much on the 6-iron into the green and caught it thin and short of the green. Chip to a foot and kicked in for birdie (-2)
#10 - bad swing with a driver. Then a good play with a hybrid over some trees from a difficult lie. Like I said, the hybrid should be yoru best club in the bag because when you have to hit a tough shot a good amount of distance, it requires a club you hit very well. I then hit a SW to 8-feet and made the birdie (-3)
#11 - Hit a so-so 7-iron to 12-feet, drained that birdie (-4)
#12 - Hit a driver hard, but pushed it and was about a foot from being O.B. Hit a 9-iron over the greens. Then a SW to 15-feet and 2-putted for par (-4)
#13 - Decent 7-iron to 15-feet. Another weak putt and made par (-4)
#14 - Good drive down the middle. About 270 yards into the wind. I hit a SW onto the green, but well short. Tough putt up a hill, but I made par (-4)
#15 - Hit a driver so-so, but down the middle. Tried to punch a 9-iron and took a so-so swing and missed left, which was dead. Tried to flop a shot and it wasn't pretty. Chipped to a foot and made bogey (-3)
#16 - Crushed a driver here to the front fringe. 2-putted for birdie (-4)
#17 - Solid driver down the left side. SW a little short of the flag, but on the green. Hit a nice putt that almost went in and made par (-4)
#18 - Hit this drive well, just short of the green. Good pitch shot to 5-feet and made the birdie (-5)
THOUGHTS: The course has a 69.3 index, so shooting 66 wasn't all that special. However, it's easy to go in with a poor mentality and think you should birdie every hole. Instead, I worked extra hard on my body language and I saw it pay dividends. I almost got a bit angry on #15 after a couple of weak swings and hitting my 3rd shot over the green. But, I got up and down for bogey there, then hit my 3 best drives of the day on the last 3 holes and went -2 on those last 3 holes to finish out.
