Course: La Cita CC
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
Stimp: 9
Played La Cita CC with my dad on a fairly warm day that was pretty breezy as the tropical storm swarms around us. La Cita had a tournament early in the morning, so they had some fairly difficult pin position. Course was generally in good condition.
#1 - I decided to hit a driver off the tree after seeing I had a fair amount of room to land it. I hit this one nicely with a nice draw down the middle. Problem was that the big oak tree was right in my way and I had a tough lie in the fairway. I tried a hybrid and hit the oak tree. I had some room on my approach, but I would need to fade it around the trees and I caught another tree. Then a poor PW that found the bunker and plugged. I then left myself in the bunker. Then a good bunker shot to a foot and made double (+2)
#2 - decent 9-iron to about 15-feet and just missed the birdie (+2)
#3 - Good 3-wood off the tee, down the middle. Tough lie with the ball below my feet, but I hit a weak PW anyway and fell into the bunker. Blasted out and then made a 4-footer for par (+2)
#4 - This is a bit of a goofy hole because an oak tree overhangs the right side and it's hard to avoid. I hit the stupid thing with a hybrid off the tee, but actually kicked out in the fairway okay. still had a 6-iron that I had to fade, which I did, but I went over the green. Then I was behind a tree with a bad like and knocked it past the green. Then a chip and a 2-putt for double bogey (+4)
#5 - Nice drive in good shape. Hit a LW to 10-feet, but missed the putt as this was a very difficult pin location. (+4)
#6 - Tried to hit a high-draw and instead I hit a low-cut. I was in the rough, but had a shot. Hit 4-iron short of the green. Decent pitch to 8-feet and made the par save (+4)
#7 - 2-club wind in our face and I hit a 7-iron pin high, about 20 feet away. Just missed the birdie putt (+4)
#8 - Decent driver that went a little too far left. Tried to hook a hybrid around some trees, but over-cooked it but it wound up in good shape. Hit a LW to 4-feet and made the birdie (+3)
#9 - Hit a good driver down the middle. Then a little punch PW to 15-feet and just missed that birdie (+3)
#10 - typically I wouldn't hit driver here, but I wanted to get down to par and I smashed a driver down the middle and hit a LW to 8-feet and made the birdie (+2)
#11 - Big driver down the middle. Tricky shot because the lie was downhill and I had to get it up in the air and I went over the green. Chip to 4-feet and made the par save (+2)
#12 - With a front pin location, I tried to hit a high 6-iron from 187 and went over the green. Chip to a foot and kicked in for par (+2)
#13 - Wind was in our face, but I hit a good driver down the middle. Then I blocked a 3-wood that hit an oak tree. Hit a poor pitch short of the green. Chipped on and 2-puted for bogey (+3)
#14 - I play this hole the same way every time. I hit the driver hard and it looks like it's going good, and then the wind cuts it right into the trees. Punched it out. Hit a decent pitch to 15 feet. I figured I was on the 0 line, so I putted straight at the cup and I was right and made the par (+3)
#15 - blocked this driver a bit, but was still in the fairway. Tried to punch an 8-iron, but went over the green. Decent pitch to 8-feet and missed the par save (+4)
#16 - Normally I wouldn't hit a driver here, but again, I needed birdies. I basically told myself that I didn't think I could miss right, so I ripped one perfectly with a draw right down the middle. Hit a choked up PW to 15 feet and made the birdie (+3)
#17 - flushed a 3-iron to about 20-feet. This was certainly a 'tournament pin.' I just missed the birdie which required a really good putt and read (+3)
#18 - this requires a draw off the tree and mine pushed. Hit a layup shot way too short. Then a 6-iron into the wind with a tough pin location. Found the green and had a very tough putt that I almost made and made the 4-footer coming back. (+3)
THOUGHTS: I didn't know that Ron Garl helped design La Cita with Lee Buck. I'm really starting to dig Garl's designs. I liked how I stuck in there after the 2 double bogeys early on. Although some unfamiliarity with the course and just dumb course management hurt me.
