Days like this remind me why Phil Leotardo should be able to change the state's motto:
Not too breezy either. Greens were excellent, course was a little busy. I'm still using the 9-degree 919THI driver with the Aldila RIP Beta as the 9-degree 919THI's are no longer on backorder.
We started on #10 today.
#10 - Good driver down over the hill. I was in an area that was 'ground under repair.' I took a free drop, then hit a SW that I thought was long, but actually about 1-inch from the cup and tapped in for birdie (-1)
#11 - Good driver that went pretty long and up against the cart path. Took a drop and played a hybrid since I wasn't nutty about the lie. Hit the hybrid well and then hit a nice LW to 5-feet. One thing I've been working on is shot and club selection. Typically, I would focus too much on the pin location and the landing area which would usually call for a SW. But, I tend to ignore the lie and that alters the shot. Here there was a downhill lie, so I added loft with a LW and hit a good shot. And made the putt. 2nd day in a row I birdied the first two holes (-2)
#12 - Hit this drive really well, thankfully I hit this driver lower because it only knicked some of the leaves. With the 10-degree driver and UST VTS shaft, I would have hit up higher on the tree and got into trouble. I then didn't feel comfortable going too much after the flag and tried to play it safe and left and I hit it too far left and went into the bunker. Good bunker shot to 5-feet, but missed the par save (-1)
#13 - Here I played a 3-wood off the tee and didn't hit it very well, but wound up okay. Then a high 8-iron that I pulled, but found the green and pin high. 2-putted for par (-1)
#14 - This is one of the holes I focused on. The pin was up-front, which calls for a high-ball mechanics. But, I was pulling the ball a tad on the range with the irons and just pulled a high-ball mechanics 8-iron on the previous hole, and you can't pull it here or you'll wind up int he drink. So, I hit a mid-traj. CP soft-8 iron to about 15 feet. Then I mis-read the putt a bit and made par (-1)
#15 - Ugly push-heel-cut into the trees. Punched out to about 130 yards. Then a PW to 15-feet and just missed that birdie (-1)
#16 - Hit a 5-iron off this tee down the middle. Then I had a weird lie in the fairway and hit it a little high and fat and found the green, but had a 40 foot putt. The first putt almost went in, but I missed the comebacker. More or less a 'ballstriking' 3-putt given the pin position. (E)
#17 - Over-draw on a 5-iron left of the green. Pretty good chip with a LW to about 4-feet, made the par save (E)
#18 - Hit this drive off the heel, but it went about 285 yards down the middle. Then a tough lie and that made for an ugly 6-iron that missed left. Rule of 12 chip (PW) that was too long, but made the 6-foot cmoebacker (E)
#1 - Ugly heel-cut with the driver. Then a pitch with a SW to about 15 feet. This was a putt that goes over a small tier and I just missed it (E)
#2 - Ugly 3-wood off the tee, but it went down the middle. Then a pulled 8-iron that found the green. Just missed about a 40 footer and made par (E)
#3 - Best drive of the day so far. I think I'm getting a feel for this tee shot, although they had the tees here all the way on the left side of the tee. So the right side of the tee may change things. Hit a 7-iron to about 12 feet. Mis-read here as I was in a saddle and the putt double-breaks with a slope at the last foot or so (E)
#4 - Good drive down the middle. The lie wasn't very good though and I hit a decent shot to about 20-feet and just missed the birdie (E)
#5 - Pulled the driver a bit and found the waste bunker. Hit it nicely with a PW, but had about a 40-foot putt. I had this putt before and almost made it last time. And...I almost made it again, lipping out and taking a par (E)
#6 - nutted a hybrid to the right side of the green to about 25 feet and killed the putt, but made the 4-foot comebacker. (E)
#7 - Good drive down the middle. I can't this driver off the deck because it launches too low. So I nutted a 3-wood and then a nice pitch with a SW to 7-feet and made the birdie (-1)
#8 - Hit this 9-iron well, but didn't flush it. It caught the front fringe and spun back into the hazard. I thought I was in the water, but the water had receeded a bit and I had a shot with a muddy lie. I chipped a LW to about 3-feet and made the par save (-1)
#9 - Good driver down the left side of the fairway, followed by a nutted 3-wood down the middle. I then hit a SW from 94 yards to about 8-feet and canned the birdie putt (-2)
THOUGHTS: I liked this way of gameplanning...focusing on the 'theme' of the course and the most difficult holes rather than focusing on the theme and the easiest holes. I also think this can be applied to the pre-round practice time. I do think that I should probably work on:
driver off the tee & deck
3-wood off the tee/deck
3 or 4-iron
Some high ball mechanics shots
I think there's a major advantage when I hit the driver off the deck, but it does take a little practice. I feel the 3-wood is the most difficult club in the bag and that needs to get grooved before the round. The 3 or 4-iron works for Danger Zone play and the high ball mechanics are good for front pin locations.
I actually didn't putt that well, but I changed some mechanics on the back nine that seemed to help.
