Course: Stoneybrook East
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
Stimp: 9
Holy moly, was it humid out. We had a ton of rain the last 4 days and yesterday ended with a big lightning storm. So the course wound up being very wet and it got real humid out there. I wanted to play Stoneybrook East and had my gameplanning for it. I'm still using the 919THI 9-degree with the Aldila RIP Beta shaft as I'm waiting for my new clubhead to arrive. I was using the Wishon Stepless shaft irons, which I found needed to be bent about 1-degree flat, except for the PW (no bending) and the 3-iron (1-degree upright).
#1 - Toe hook off the tee, but wound up in a good spot. Hit 6-iron that just didn't get to the green. chip and a putt for par (E)
#2 - Decent driver down the right side. Hit 7-iron onto the front edge. Great example of why speed was important as I made a bit of a mis-read, but had dead-on speed and only had a 3-footer for par and I made it (E)
#3 - I foolishly tried to hit a high 6-iron to a high pin. This was one my 'difficult' holes in my gameplanning and I should have just tried to hit the GIR. I almost went into the water and then hit a bump-n-run with a 9-iron to about 18-feet and 2-putted for bogey (+1)
#4 - decent driver down the right side. Didn't feel comfortable with a 3-wood so I took out a hybrid instead. Hit that well, then a so-so SW to 15-feet and 2-putted for par (+1)
#5 - I just caught the hybrid off the toe here and it over-drawed into the brush and I had to take an unplayable. I hit a PW onto the green and 2-putted for bogey (+2)
#6 - Pulled a PW into the greenside bunker. Blasted out and missed an 8-footer for par (+3)
#7 - decent 3-wood off the tee that went down the middle. Hit a 6-iron onto the green and 2-putted for par (+3)
#8 - Pushed a driver a bit and wound up okay. Crummy hybrid due to a bad swing, but it wound up okay. Hit a PW on, but well short of the flag and 2-putted from 50-feet for par (+3)
#9 - so-so driver down the left side. Then a SW to about 8-feet and made the birdie (+2)
#10 - Decent driver strike, but it kicked into the fairway bunker. With my UST Mamiya and 10-degree driver head that goes well past the bunker. But, I did fire one at the flag to about 6-feet and made the birdie (+1)
#11 - Good driver downe the middle followed by a decent 3-wood. Hit a low, penetrating LW to about 7-feet and hung it on the lip. (+1)
#12 - Tried to hit a high-ball 9-iron and I struck it well, but hit a big pull-hook. Didn't have the right club on the pitch and didn't hit it very close and 2-putted for bogey (+2)
#13 - Decent driver down the right side of the fairway. Flagged a 7-iron to 12-feet and just missed the birdie (+2)
#14 - Over-cooked a driver left, but wound up in decent position. I still had to hit a 5-iron which I did nicely. Then a so-so SW to 15-feet and just missed the birdie (+2)
#15 - Flushed a 7-iron into the wind to 8-feet, canned the birdie putt (+1)
#16 - Decent driver down the right side. Hit a great 3-iron to 10 feet, but missed the birdie (+1)
#17 - So-so hybrid that wound up nicely down the left side of the fairway. This was followed by a so-so PW onto the green. thought the putt would break right, but it never did and made par (+1)
#18 - over-cooked a driver but wound up in a good spot. Hit a 6-iron over the green and into the back bunker. the bunker is soaked from all of the rain. But, I hit a really good bunker shot to 3-feet and save the par (+1)
THOUGHTS: pretty happy with the round considering I was handicapped with the driver. However, I think if I take a good swing with the driver I'll hit it fairly well. But even so, I'm losing about 25 yards with it. I hit some really good shots on the back nine and the putting is starting to get better and better lately.
I think I have a better gameplan for this course next time. Focus on the first seven holes and hitting more GIR there.
