Course: Mission Inn (El Campeon)
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
Stimp: 9
My dad and I decided to play Mission Inn after hearing good things about it. We only had to pay $35 per person for green fees + cart. It was pretty hot out, that typical 93* and super humid. Mission Inn is also the home to Gary Gilchrist's Junior Academy and the juniors were in full force practicing and then taking shuttles presumably to their dorm room. The course was in excellent shape for Central Florida this time of year.
#1 - Hit a decent driver down the middle. Nice 3-wood just short of the green. Hit a chip to a foot and made birdie (-1)
#2 - flushed a 7-iron to 20-feet and just missed the putt (-1)
#3 - Pushed my driver a little and it went into the right fairway bunker. I hit a SW out 100 yards into the fairway since I really didn't have a shot. I then hit an ugly push with the SW off the green. Then I chipped in for a 'routine par.' (-1)
#4 - Good driver down the middle followed by a 7-iron that went just off the fringe. Makeable chip that just missed and came away with a par (-1)
#5 - Snap hooked a driver into the trees. Punched out. Then hit a driver off the deck just short of the green. Good pitch to 8-feet, but missed the putt and made double (+1)
#6 - Pulled a driver into the fairway bunker. Fatted one short of the green. Another good pitch and lipped out the par save (+2)
#7 - Crushed a driver down the middle. Pushed a 6-iron into the bunker. Blasted to 10-feet and lipped out that putt as well (+3)
#8 - Hit a 4-iron so-so and missed the green long. Sorta difficult chip, but I didn't hit a good one. Then I lipped another putt..3rd one in a row. (+4)
#9 - Hit 3-wood off the tee really well, but found the fairway bunker. Should have used a hybrid, but didn't know any better. Hit a 9-iron out of the fairway bunker onto the green. Terrible first putt from 50-feet, but made the 8-footer to save par (+4)
#10 - Good driver down the left side followed by a good 3-wood short of the green. A pitch to 6-feet and made the birdie (+3)
#11 - Good driver that just found the right rough. Hit a beautiful 6-iron to 12-feet. God awful putt, but made par (+3)
#12 - Hooked a hybrid (242 yard par-3) into the bunker. So-so bunker shot to 15-feet and 2-putted for bogey (+4)
#13 - Didn't hit the driver well, but it went down the middle. Hit a SW to 15-feet. Couldn't convince myself that it was straight and made par (+4)
#14 - Hooked one into the woods, but I started to realize what some of my issues were. I wound up in the woods, but with a good lie and a clear shot at the green and I hit a nice 3-wood short of the green. Flopped to 10-feet, but missed the birdie (+4)
#15 - Nice PW to 12-feet and canned the birdie (+3)
#16 - This is when the storm was brewing and the wind was hard in our face. I hit a nice driver down the middle. I then tried to get cute and hit it fat and short of the green. Then a flop to 12-feet and missed the par save (+4)
#17 - Little bit of a hook off the tee that wound up by the bunker. This hole is called the 'Devil's Delight', a double dog leg par-5. I hit a 8-iron and hit a PW to the front part of the green and 2-putted for par (+4)
#18 - Wind was blowing super hard and I smashed a driver that went thru the fairway and into the fairway bunker. I pushed a 5-iron out of the fairway bunker that almost went into the water. Pitched to 12-feet and 2-putted and got the hell out of there before the storm hit (+5)
THOUGHTS: Mission Inn is a great course, but I think you need to play it a couple of times because it's hard to get a feel of where the landing areas are because of the elevations. Still, it was a fun course.
Right now my backswing is getting just about where I want it, but I've ingrained the downswing compensations for so long that when they creep up, I can't hit it well. So I have to work on not employing those downswing compensations and I think I'm ready to play some really great golf.
