This is my round from Saturday:
Course: The Villages (Lopez Course)
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
Stimp: 8
My dad and I went out to play and it was fairly hot out. We wound up playing the front 9 with another gentleman, who quit. Then we started to make some really good time on the back-9, but towards the last 3 holes you could see the old folks start to wilt under the sun.
#1 – Hit this driver hard and had a good trajectory, but found the fairway bunker. Caught the fairway bunker shot fat, then hit a flop shot to 10-feet. Missed the putt short and made bogey (+1)
#2 – I had played this difficult hole well in the past, but here I hit an ugly 4-iron. Good thing I didn’t connect because I went well over the green anyway. I had a tough lie and just got it up to the fringe. Chipped on and kicked in for bogey (+2)
#3 – Smashed a driver down the pipe. Caught an 8-iron a little heavy, but found the right side of the green. Sort of a mis-read as I played for a double breaker and it only broke once. Made par (+2)
#4 – Got away with a swing here as I ‘saved’ myself on the downswing. I then hit a driver off the deck but went into the hazard. The hazard area I was in was deep rough and weeds, so I had a shot I just couldn’t ground the club. I hit a nice shot to 10-feet, but missed the birdie putt (+2)
#5 – Good driver down the middle followed by a decent 9-iron to 20-feet and I 2-putted for par (+2)
#6 – Didn’t quite catch a 7-iron and the wind took it and wound up short of the green. Almost made the chip with a SW, but ran it 4-feet bye. Nailed the comebacker for par (+2)
#7 – Back foot slipped a little, but found the fairway. Hit a good PW to 15-feet but had a severe downhill putt. Just missed the birdie putt and came away with a par (+2)
#8 – Decent driver down the right side followed up by a nice 3-wood. I had 40 yards or so to a front cut pin. I tried to hit a flop which was going right at the flag, but went well past the pin. I should hit tried to hit a pitch or a lob shot with the LW. Stupid play. Although I just missed the birdie putt (+2)
#9 – I’ve had some hooking problems with the hybrid lately and I hooked this one that probably should have gone in the drink. I then flushed a PW that flew the green as I caught a flier. I flopped on to 8-feet and made a nice putt to save par. (+2)
#10 – Crushed a driver perfectly down the right side. I then hooked the hybrid again, into the bunker. This is a nearly impossible bunker shot and you think you can just get it out of the bunker and it will roll to the green. But, they protected against that by growing the rough some more. I did that and wound up short. Then an awful chip that still stayed on the green. Thankfully, I made a 15-footer to save par (+2)
#11 – Ugly 3-iron that wound up short of the green. Should have hit a SW here, but I took a LW and landed it where I wanted to, but it’s not going to scoot up to the hole when the green is sloping that severely uphill. 2-putted for bogey (+3)
#12 – Good driver down the middle, up by the green. Good pitch to 8-feet, but again…missed the birdie putt (+3)
#13 – Smashed a driver beautifully down the middle. I had only played this 9-holes (Lopez is a 27-hole course) once before and I didn’t quite remember how the green played. So I thought I hit a good shot with a SW and realized I hit a poor one. Despite that, I almost drained a 45-footer at 90° on AimPoint with a 4% slope. (+3)
#14 – Ugly driver here but wound up okay. I then flushed 5-iron, one of my best long iron shots in a while. I then hit a putt that just ran past the edge and made par (+3)
#15 – Good 3-wood off the tee followed by a SW that I hit so-so but found the green. I need to check the lie angle on the SW and see if that’s giving me issues because I hit the LW fantastic. Anyway, these greens are extremely difficult and this putt I just tapped and watched it wobble to a foot and kicked in for par (+3)
#16 – Decent driver in the left rough. Hit a so-so SW to the front fringe, which was okay given the pin location. Chipped and just missed and made par (+3)
#17 – Solid 6-iron to 20-feet. Had it read perfectly, just a tad too soft and it lipped the low side of the cup and made par (+3)
#18 – Not my favorite hole because the tee shot is somewhat difficult and the tee box is located in an area where leaves and acorns are falling down on you. I hit a skanky tee shot followed by an ugly driver off the deck. I really need to work on that. Hit a SW to the back edge of the green and 2-putted for par (+3)
THOUGHTS: I was working on a few things in my swing. From my last lesson with George, I incorporated some new things and started to fall back into some old habits as I worked on the new pieces. This round I started hitting it great out on the range, had a rough start, and then looked good from roughly holes #3 thru #10.
Lopez and a lot of the courses at The Villages are difficult to go low on because their greens are very undulated and very slow. So if you want to go low, you must hit a lot of greens.
