Course: Metrowest GC
Stimp: 9
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
I decided to play Metrowest at 7:30 in the morning. I didn’t even knew that the earth existed before 7 am. Anyway, the course’s condition is improving as the greens are looking nice, but the fairways are quite hairy. There was also a lot of dew on the ground and the ground was generally soft from the rain we have been receiving.
#1: Blast a drive right down the middle. Probably my best drive of the entire round. I had 108 yards into the green and hit a SW that went over the green a little because the green narrows as the pin is in back. I learned to not shoot for back pin locations on this hole. Not a good chip, but made a 4-footer to save par (E)
#2: Caught a drive a little off the heel and it cut on me and wound up on the hill next to the bunker. I actually had a good shot at the green, but the rough was so thick and the dew on the ground make it thicker. I thought I hit a 8-iron nicely, but it wound up well short of the green. I then shanked a LW which I’ve done on uphill pitch shots for some reason. I actually wound up okay after the shank and chipped up to a foot and made the bogey (+1)
#3: Flushed a 4-iron onto the green. Difficult 20 footer, but just missed and made par (+1)
#4: Hit a so-so drive into the right rough. Hit a good 3-wood, but the ball wound up kicking into the rough. I then hit a choke up PW that landed on the green and bounced off. Chipped to 3-feet, but missed the par save (+2)
#5: Hit a driver well here, but it caught the bunker. The humidity was just so thick at this point it was making it hard to travel the ball in the air. I hit a pretty good 9-iron out of a tough fairway bunker shot, but it wound up in the green side bunker. Lousy bunker shot (I’ll have to practice those this week). Chipped up to a few inches and made bogey (+3)
#6: Low, toe-hook into the fairway bunker. Hit a nice shot with a 5-iron, but wound up in the greenside bunker. So-so bunker shot. 2-putted and made bogey. (+4)
#7: Another low-pull draw into the fairway bunker. Could only wedge it out of there. Hit a good 3-wood down the right side. Then a good SW, but the hole was on a crown and it was nearly impossible to get it close from that distance. 2-putted and made bogey (+5)
#8: Pulled a 7-iron on a weak swing. Shanked another LW on an uphill pitch. Then a chip up to a foot and made the bogey (+6)
#9: Ugly driver off the tee that wound up in a decent spot. Flushed a 9-iron onto the green, but about 25 feet past. Almost made the birdie (+6)
#10: Hit a driver off the neck, but wound up in a decent spot, followed by a necked 3-wood. I then choked down on a PW and it went over the green. Putted off the fringe to a couple of feet and made par (+6)
#11: Another neck-ish driver off the tee, but in the fairway. Had 85 yards, almost jarred it with a LW and made birdie (+5)
#12: Busted a driver down the pipe. Another time when I needed a Gap Wedge and instead choked down on a PW and it went on the green, but left myself with a difficult 30 footer and made a nice putt and par (+5)
#13: Hit a driver well, but it cut and into the right rough. We spent a few minutes looking for it and finally found it by accident. I could barely get the ball out with a PW. But, I hit a pitch with the LW to 5-feet. Unfortunately, I missed the par save (+6)
#14: Solid driver down the right side. I decided to lay up on this hole and try to get it to 85 yards because that’s where the flat spot is. I hit a decent 3-iron to about 90 yards. Hit a LW to 2-feet and made birdie (+5)
#15: Mis-hit a 5-iron short of the green. Hit a LW to 5-feet, missed the par save (+6)
#16: Solid, low driver down the middle. Had a bit of a funky lie in the fairway and decided to play for the middle of the green. From 160 yards to the green with the wind in our face, I hit an 8-iron about 161 yards and was just over the green. So I can see the positive effect that the Stepless shafts have into the wind because they’ll hold their distance better. Hit a nice chip with a LW to a few inches and saved par (+6)
#17: I played this one from the back tees for the hell of it. Hit a hybrid well into the wind, but went into the green side bunker. Funky lie in the bunker and just got it to 15-feet and 2-putted for bogey (+7)
#18: Good driver down the right side. Hit a beautiful 8-iron from a sidehill lie to 3-feet and canned the birdie (+6)
THOUGHTS: Good learning experience and I look at it like I’m getting the bad round out of the way. Need to get a Gap Wedge for this course and gap the wedge distances better. I’m thinking going in 15 yard increments from my PW to my LW. Need to work on putting and hitting tee shots on the back nine.
