Course: North Shore
Stimp: 8
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
After playing Metrowest in the morning, I decided to get a Cleveland wedge and GolfSmith, eat some lunch, watch the Open and take a nap. Then I headed off to North Shore hoping to improve upon my poor play at Metrowest.
#1: Toed one big time, but it wound up being a push shot that was fine. Hit a 50 yard LW shot to 5-feet and drained the birdie (-1)
#2: Hit a 3-wood well, but pushed it too far right. I was under a tree, so I decided to try and hit it to 80-90 yards and see if I could bail myself out with a LW. So I punched a 9-iron to 88 yards, hit a full LW to 2-feet and made par (-1)
#3: It had poured for about 30 minutes before I played and with the ground being soft and the humidity, the ball was not flying nearly as far or rolling much. So this good drive only made it to 190 yards, about a 260 yard well struck drive. Hit pulled a 4-iron left of the green and had a nice pitch with a LW to 5-feet, but couldn’t make the downhiller (E)
#4: Good driver down the pipe. I hit a 7-iron to the middle of the green on a right upper corner pin location. Almost made a 40-footer for birdie (E)
#5: Good driver down the right side. I had that distance I like, 87 yards. But, I didn’t quite catch this LW and wound up short of the pin. Almost made this 30-footer which I read at 2 feet outside the right edge and made par (E)
#6: Hit a good hybrid onto the green. Just burned the cup for birdie and made par (E)
#7: Good driver down the left side, but I was left with a tight lie. I tried to hit a 5-iron to 85 yards, but didn’t quite catch it and was at 102 yards. Hit my new Cleveland SW pretty well, but had 20-feet for birdie and drained the birdie (-1)
#8: Flagged a PW, made a 4-footer for birdie (-2)
#9: Decent driver down the left side. I was going to pull out my 3-wood, but I thought that if I could hit a driver off the deck pretty hard and get it to 80-90 yards, I’d be in good position to make a birdie. I hit it 85 yards and hit my LW to 10-feet and canned the birdie (-3)
#10: Good driver off the tee, but it went into a ground under repair area. Dropped. Flushed my new Cleveland SW that I hit approximately 109 yards and went slightly over the green. Then I chipped in with my new Cleveland SW for birdie, my 4th birdie in a row (-4)
#11: Ugly steer-cut right. Hit a nice hybrid over some trees. Then a PW that I kinda was robbed on since it didn’t bite. I then had the read, but missed my shot at 5-birdies in a row by about 2 inches. (-4)
#12: A little pull-cut that wound up nicely. Started to go into information over-load and hit an ugly 8-iron short of the green. Chipped with a LW to 4-feet and made the par save (-4)
#13: Busted a 3-wood right at the 150 stick. Pulled a 9-iron but found the green. Probably had the right line, but hit it way too hard. Had a 5-footer coming back and I had the read but hit it too softly and made bogey (-3)
#14: Nice 8-iron finds the green and I just miss the 20-footer for birdie. A guy int the group in front of me comes up and our conversation is:
Dude: Did you find a club?
Me: Yes, on the 8th hole I found a Callaway 9-iron and turned it into the pro shop
Dude: Well, I’m looking for a pitching wedge.
Me: Nope, I found a 9-iron. In fact, it looks like the same model as the one in your bag.
Dude: But I’m looking for a pitching wedge.
(-3)
#15: Ahh, this is why this hole can suck. I busted a driver here and was a smidge off line. Sometimes you can get away with it, but this time I didn’t and wound up under a Spanish Moss tree. Punched out and wound up with a tough lie, but hit a PW to 10-feet. Missed the 10-footer. The dude in front of me comes back again and says:
Dude: did you say you found a Callaway 9-iron?
Me: Yes.
Dude: That was mine. (starts looking around)
Me: It’s in the pro shop.
Dude: Oh, thanks.
Yes, he was sober.
(-3)
#16: Bust a 3-iron down the middle. I thought I hit a MONEY shot here, but it hits the left center part of the green and spins off the green. Chip with a LW to 4-feet and save par (-3)
Dude: So, you didn’t see a PW lying around here?
#17: Couldn’t quite trust myself to fire towards the right pin location and just missed left. Rule of 12 chip (8-iron) to 4-feet, but missed the par save (-2)
#18: I knew on this hole I was probably going to have a Danger Zone shot into the green, so I just wanted to hit the ball well and find the fairway. I wound up with 190 to the center, 204 to the pin. Hit a PW fairly well, but found the green which is why hitting fairways in Danger Zone shots is so important.
Ugly first putt, but made the par putt (-2)
THOUGHTS: Much better round although I think all of the changes in green stimps messes with my putting too much. Had a really nice streak going there and just needed a few breaks. Really digging the Cleveland SW. My yardage gaps with my irons are about 12-13 yards. I would like to go into 15 yard gaps from the PW to LW, so that’s about:
PW: 135 yards
GW: 120 yards
SW: 105 yards
LW: 90 yards
33-37=70 (-2)
11/14 FWY
12/18 GIR
28 putts
4 impeded shots
