Here’s a video of Tom explaining the 555 model irons
Wishon’s irons are designed with clubfitting in mind. One of things you will see when you look at the specs is their head weights are very light.
Outside of some of the GolfSmith iron heads, I have yet to find any modern club company with head weights as light as Wishon’s. And Tom used to be the head of GolfSmith’s Club Design, thus where they got the idea to make the heads lighter.
Wishon is very intolerant as far as head weights go. When I receive these heads in the mail, each head is labeled by Wishon Golf with their head weight measurement to the nearest tenth of a gram and lie angle. I have found numerous OEM heads where the heads were nowhere near being in 7-gram increments. In fact, I recently asked Mizuno if they could give me their head weights for their irons and they refused to do so, citing that it was proprietary information.
The idea is this…regardless if a clubmaker uses MOI matching or swingweight matching, it’s always easier to add weight to the club than to take weight off the club. And when you take weight off the club, you can possibly greatly affect the attributes of the club. You can take weight off by trimming the shaft, getting a lighter shaft or drilling holes in the head. We can see how that would possibly dramatically affect the design of the club. But with lighter head weights, one can simply use a hosel weight and/or lead tape until they find the weight that best suits them and not impact the club design at all.
The heads are made from 1035 carbon steel. The claim by Wishon is that they use a 5th step in their forging process that provides greater production consistency. I’ve really never noticed that part either way.
I do like the satin finish which really ages well over time.
I think these irons are suited for golfers with more consistent swings and a more serious attitude about their golf game. I’ve made some sets for golfers who swing as slow at 90 mph with the driver to as fast as 115 mph and they have all expressed their liking for them.
Since they are easier to MOI match, I personally do not sell these irons until the golfer has been MOI fitted for the irons and then I will MOI-match the set myself.
