Course: Southern Dunes GC
Stimp: 11
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
My dad and I played Southern Dunes, a course that I have been wanting to play for a while. The greens were...fast. But it was fun because the ball 'holds its line' so much better. You don't worry about the ball breaking too much or not enough at the end, oh the Tour pros have it real good.
#1: Blistered a driver down the pipe. Over-drawed a 7-iron onto the green. This putt had a big swale and I wasn't used to the green speed and left it 7-feet short. However, I canned the 7-footer, a tough one right on the swale to save par (E)
#2: Hit a 3-wood off the tee since I have never played this course and hit one right down the middle. Hit a SW to 7-feet and canned the birdie (-1)
#3: Long par-3 that I smashed a hybrid just left of the flag. Putt was going straight downhill and I hit it too hard and I made par (-1)
#4: Good drive that the wind took a little and went in the first cut of rough. I had a poor lie, so I smashed a hybrid. I then tried to hit a choke-down PW since i was in between clubs. It was a poor shot which left me with a tough putt that I knocked 5-feet past, but made the comebacker (-1)
#5: This hole has a split fairway, so I hit a hybrid off the tee down the right side, which is the short way home. I then hit a SW right over the flag, but it went 20-feet past. I then drained the 20-footer for birdie (-2)
#6: They moved the tee up here and I hit an 8-iron to 15-feet. A little too much gas and I missed high and made par (-2)
#7: Cool golf hole and I hit a really good drive. I pushed a 6-iron into the right bunker, thinking that missing right was better than missing left. Of course, I was wrong. This left a sand shot to a steep downhill sloped green. I hit a good bunker shot, but still had 12-feet to the cup. I then hit a putt that I thought was money, but just missed and made bogey (-1)
#8: Didn't hit a very good drive here, but was okay. I hit a 4-iron into the wind that went short and into the greenside bunker. Hit a nice bunker shot to 5-feet and saved the par (-1)
#9: Good driver down the middle followed by an ugly 3-wood. Very small green with a huge slope. I hit 60-yard shot that went to about 7-feet. But as I went to put my LW back in the bag, the ball had rolled off the swale and off the green. I chipped to 2-feet and kicked in for par (-1)
#10: Caught one a little off the toe and missed the fairway. Hit a great 4-iron from the rough, but a little too good as it went over the green. One of those shots with an uphill lie to an elevated green with a downhill slope to the pin. I really hit the wrong club, using a SW instead of a LW. I then missed the 15-footer coming back and made bogey (E)
#11: They moved the tees up on this hole and it's an elevated tee, so I only had a 7-iron into the green. I had the line, but left it short and made par (E)
#12: Good driver down the middle followed by a so-so 3-wood that wound up short of the greenside bunker, but left me with a flop shot from a poor lie. I wound up 20-feet away and 2-putted for par (E)
#13: Weak driver here, but wound up okay. I then flushed a 4-iron that took a bad kick and just missed the green. Mediocre chip to 6-feet, but made the par save (E)
#14: Big draw 8-iron from the wind that are pin high. Almost made the putt and wond up with par (E)
#15: I didn't quite know how to play the hole. I hit 3-wood off the tee and hit it too far into the fairway bunker. I then hit a 9-iron to 3-feet and made birdie (-1)
#16: Hit a good driver down the middle and then hit a driver off the deck. Nice SW to 5-feet and drained the birdie (-2)
#17: One of my best drives of the day down the right side of the fairway. I hit the 8-iron to 20-feet and it was a steep putt that I just missed, but went 5-feet bye. Made the comebacker (-2)
#18: Good driver down the middle. Then a 4-iron to 20-feet and I read the double breaker perfectly and canned the birdie (-3)
THOUGHTS: I honestly don't see the course as being that difficult and it was fun to play some faster greens. However, it does help to hit the driver well and I've done that 2 rounds in a row with the shorter driver shaft. Hopefully I'll continue with the good momentum.
