I will be putting together a 4-wood for my dad for Xmas. Currently, he plays a Cleveland Hi-Bore XL 3-wood, 15* loft, 43" long and with a Grafalloy Blue regular flex shaft. He currently has a 44-3/4" Wishon 959OL Driver with a 10.5* loft and a Wishon Blue regular flex shaft. What I'm going to do is give him the following: Wishon 929HS 16.5* loft 42.5" long Wishon S2S White A Flex shaft From observing golfers of similar handicaps, the 3-wood is a fairly important club because they have to use it on longer par-4's or if they don't hit a good drive, along with par-5's. My dad hits his 3-wood off and on. Generally hitting a pull and about 190-210 yards. I think he hits it too low as well. I think the shallower head will work for my dad since he rarely uses the 3-wood off the tee. I think the lower CoG combined with the added loft will increase the launch angle. I estimate he'll lose about 1 mph of clubhead speed with the 1/2" shaved off the shaft. But I think the launch angle will be better and he'll hit less pulls. Plus, I think he should increase smash factor to negate the loss of 1 mph of clubhead peed. Since he's playing with a shorter shaft, the Wishon S2S blue shaft, which weighs about 55 grams, is too light for him. I was told from Matt Mohi of Wishon that a comparable fairway wood shaft would be the S2S white, but in the A flex. We will then MOI fit him for the club when he receives it. 3JACK

pretty cool gift. I have an older friend and I can not convince him to try a 4 wood. He would hit it so much better then a 3 wood. Without the swing speed he can not get the carry he needs.
