Course: Deltona Club
Stimp: 8
Ball: Titleist Pro V1x
Weather: 70-75, 2 club wind
We decided to play the Deltona Club as my parents were in the city the night before for the Seinfeld show. I had played Deltona Club about 3 years ago when I first moved down to Orlando. We liked the design and the greens were in decent shape for a Florida Spring, but the tee boxes and fairways were in rough shape. I think I shot 74 the first time around as I was using the Advanced Ballstriking system.
This time around I’ve been working with M.O.R.A.D. and the past couple of weeks a light went on and I could start to see some of my main issues I’ve had working with George. I had played Walkabout the day before and hit it pretty well even though I shot 78 (3-4 club wind that day). So, I was excited to get out on a course that is not nearly as difficult as Walkabout.
The course this time around was in much better condition. The fairways and tees were serviceable. The greens were not fast, but were in excellent condition. And this is a very underrated layout.
#1: Decent driver that found the right rough. I had a bit of a difficult lie and hit this one a bit thin, but dead center of the club and it flew nicer than I hit it. I chipped on to 3-feet and saved par ( E )
#2: I’ve been able to really control a fade with the new stuff I’ve been trying. I may lose a little distance because it gets a little too spinny, but it’s developing into a ‘go to shot.’ I smashed one down the middle here. This left me with a 180 yard shot with a downhill lie to a slightly elevated green with the wind in my face. I flush a 4-iron to 17 feet and make the birdie putt (-1)
#3: Flushed a 5-iron to 35-feet. I didn’t have my AimPoint chart with me, so I guessed at 2-½ feet left and it broke more than that. I made a 4-footer to save par (-1)
#4: Solid driver down the middle. Caught a 3-iron a little fat and fell short of the green. I was on a hill hitting to a green that was well below the hill. This threw me off and I hit the pitch shot too far. Had a 20-footer for par and made bogey ( E )
#5: Hit a driver well down the middle. I then ripped a driver off the deck. I thought it went in the waste bunker short of the green, but it actually made the green in two shots. My first putt had the line, but was 3-feet short and I made the birdie putt (-1)
#6: Good driver down the middle that was followed by a decent 3-iron into the wind that found the huge green. Had a 75 foot putt and left it 6-feet short. Saved the par putt (-1)
#7: Good driver down the middle. I then hit another driver off the deck that ended up just short of the green. This was a difficult pitch since there was a false front and the pin was just tucked behind that. Looking back, I should have tried to land it there with a LW. I tried to bump it along the ridge with the PW and went 20-feet bye. Just missed the birdie putt and made par (-1)
#8: Smashed a big drive just short of the green. This is a tough pitch shot because you really need to hit a short shot high with a lot of spin since the green slopes pretty severely away from you. I thought I hit a good one, but it went 18-feet bye. I just missed the birdie putt (-1)
#9: Little push with a 6-iron that found the right side of the green. Had a 40-footer for birdie that I just missed, but went about 6-feet bye. I then hit a nice putt on a tough line and made par (-1)
#10: Good driver down the middle. I hit a punch 8-iron to 20-feet. Decent putt, but made par (-1)
#11: A 242 yard par-3 into the wind called for a 3-wood. I got a little under the 3-wood and hit it 30-feet. Good putter here that just missed and made par (-1)
#12: This hole has a waste bunker that splits the fairway. I was aiming slightly right of the waste bunker and thought the left-to-right wind would move the ball to the fairway. Instead, I missed it left by a few degrees and the wind never moved the ball and I found the waste bunker with a lip I had to deal with and a bad lie. I tried to lay-up with an 8-iron, but hit a poor shot and had to hit a SW over a tree with a tight lie. I hit it to 15-feet and just missed the par save ( E )
#13: Smashed a driver down the middle. Hit another driver off the deck to about 40 yards to the pin. Hit a LW to 8-feet and made the birdie (-1)
#14: Hit a 3-iron a little high on the face and missed the green right. Decent chip to 12-feet. Lipped out the par save ( E )
#15: Good driver down the middle. It’s hard to gauge the green since you’re hitting so far uphill. I punched an 8-iron and missed short and left. I chipped with a SW to 5-feet and saved par ( E )
#16: Good driver down the middle and I hit a nice driver off the deck. But, it went into the waste bunker. I then hit a great waste bunker shot as I had about 40 yards to the pin and it was all carry over the waste bunker. I hit it to 10-feet. I thought the putt was in, but a little too hard and it lipped out. ( E )
#17: Good driver down the middle. I then flushed a 4-iron, probably the best shot the day, to 25=feet. I had the speed, but the read was a little to the right and I tapped in for par ( E )
#18: This is a bit of a goofy hole. I tried to carry the waste bunker, but the wind was too much. I then tried a full LW from the waste bunker and it flew the green. I then tried a difficult flop shot and didn’t have enough and missed short. Chipped on and 2-putted for double gobey (+2)
35-39=74 (+2)
11/14 fwy
12/18 GIR
-4 G.I.R.O. score
2 Impeded Shots
THOUGHTS: Very happy with the ballstriking. In fact, my dad said that was the best he’s seen me strike it in forever as the irons were flushed and I didn’t have an even mediocre drive. I worked on some things in the routine with the putter and I started to see them work a bit. So happy with the progress all the way around.
